Article Abstract

Aligning resident and training program attributes is critical. Many programs screen and select residents using assessment tools not grounded in available evidence. This can introduce bias and inappropriate trainee recruitment. Prior reviews of this literature did not include the important lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This study's objective is to summarize the evidence linking elements in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application with selection and training outcomes, including DEI factors. A systematic review was conducted on March 30, 2022, concordant with PRISMA guidelines, to identify the data supporting the use of elements contained in ERAS and interviews for residency training programs in the United States. Studies were coded into the topics of research, awards, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores, personal statement, letters of recommendation, medical school transcripts, work and volunteer experiences, medical school demographics, DEI, and presence of additional degrees, as well as the interview. The 2599 identified unique studies were reviewed by 2 authors with conflicts adjudicated by a third. Ultimately, 231 meeting inclusion criteria were included (kappa=0.53). Based on the studies reviewed, low-quality research supports use of the interview, Medical Student Performance Evaluation, personal statement, research productivity, prior experience, and letters of recommendation in resident selection, while USMLE scores, grades, national ranking, attainment of additional degrees, and receipt of awards should have a limited role in this process.

Introduction: We compared and measured alignment between the Health Level Seven (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard used by electronic health records (EHRs), the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) standards used by industry, and the Uniform Data Set (UDS) used by the Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs).

Methods: The ADRC UDS, consisting of 5959 data elements across eleven packets, was mapped to FHIR and CDISC standards by two independent mappers, with discrepancies adjudicated by experts.

Results: Forty-five percent of the 5959 UDS data elements mapped to the FHIR standard, indicating possible electronic obtainment from EHRs.

Objective: From October 18-20, 2022, the National Institutes of Health held a workshop to examine the state of the science concerning obesity interventions in adults to promote health equity. The workshop had three objectives: (1) Convene experts from key institutions and the community to identify gaps in knowledge and opportunities to address obesity, (2) generate recommendations for obesity prevention and treatment to achieve health equity, and (3) identify challenges and needs to address obesity prevalence and disparities, and develop a diverse workforce.

The catastrophic Los Angeles Fires of January 2025 underscore the urgent need to understand the complex interplay between hydroclimatic variability and wildfire behavior. This study investigates how sequential wet and dry periods, hydroclimatic rebound events, create compounding environmental conditions that culminate in extreme fire events. Our results show that a cascade of moisture anomalies, from the atmosphere to vegetation health, precedes these fires by around 6-27 months.

Background: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) function, rather than its concentration, plays a crucial role in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Diminished HDL antioxidant properties, indicated by elevated oxidized HDL (nHDL) and diminished paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity, may contribute to vascular dysfunction and inflammation. Data on these associations in CAD patients, including acute coronary syndrome (ACS), remain limited.
