Protection of athletes during sporting activities was of some concern even in the late 1800s. That concern continues, over 140 years later. In baseball, safety for the catcher was of primary concern because of inherent risks of being "behind the plate" while balls are pitched, bats are swung, and runners attempting to score come barreling in. Doug Allison was the skilled catcher for the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings who was known to use certain objects for self-protection, including George Wright's rubber "Mouthpiece." This report reviews earliest development of mouth protection in baseball, as known through reports of the times, and Doug Allison's career.

Does the use of mouthguards (MGs) effectively prevent dentofacial injuries in athletes? Research Protocol: An umbrella review of systematic reviews (SRs) with or without meta-analyses was conducted. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews guidelines, and the AMSTAR 2 tool was used for methodological quality assessment. A comprehensive search was conducted across MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and gray literature sources.

Aim: The aim of the present in vitro study was to synthesize and characterize green silver nanoparticles using Larrea tridentata leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent and combining the nanoparticles with a commercial fluoride varnish (Fluor Protector) to evaluate the antibacterial activity in the production of acid and the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus.
Methods: Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by green synthesis using Larrea tridentata leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent and characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations were determined using microdiluted plates.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the efficacy of ammonium fluoride solution (AFS) combined with nano sol calcium fluoride (nano-CaF) for the treatment of active buccal white spot lesions (WSLs) in permanent dentition.
Materials And Methods: Participants with at least 2 WSLs in different quadrants were included in the splitmouth randomized clinical trial. The WSLs meeting the inclusion criteria (n = 60) were randomly assigned into test and control groups.

Introduction: Dental injuries contribute to 57% of reported maxillofacial injuries in Gaelic Football, with associated psychological and economic impacts on the affected athletes. Mouthguards have been developed in efforts to mitigate the incidence and severity of dental injuries, and use is mandatory in Gaelic Football. Dental claims have reduced by over 50% since mouthguards became mandatory, but costs of dental injuries are still prevalent.
