Article Abstract

(Burk.) F. H. Chen, a species of the genus Panax, radix has been traditionally used to deal with various hematological diseases and cardiovascular diseases since ancient times in East Asia. produces recalcitrant seeds which are sensitive to desiccation and difficult to store for a long time. However, few data are available on the mechanism of the desiccation sensitivity of seeds. To gain a comprehensive perspective of the genes associated with desiccation sensitivity, cDNA libraries from seeds under control and desiccation processes were prepared independently for Illumina sequencing. The data generated a total of 70,189,896 reads that were integrated and assembled into 55,097 unigenes with a mean length of 783 bp. In total, 12,025 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified during the desiccation process. Among these DEGs, a number of central metabolism, hormonal network-, fatty acid-, and ascorbate-glutathione-related genes were included. Our data provide a comprehensive resource for identifying the genes associated with the desiccation sensitivity of seeds.

Stainless-steel substrates have grown in importance in the development of planar sorptive phases. However, the reduced wettability of polished sheets makes difficult their functionalization. This limitation can be solved by using amorphous silica gel microparticles as superficial guides.

Some desiccation-tolerant organisms accumulate intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), such as Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins, which help protect other proteins from inactivation and/or aggregation during desiccation. Like other IDPs, LEA proteins adopt ensembles of extended conformations that shift in response to environmental changes. Desiccation causes dramatic changes in the cellular environment, but it is unclear how the structural malleability of LEAs is related to their protective function.

This study evaluates the impact of ultrasound (US), ethanol (ET), and combined ultrasound-ethanol (ET/US) pretreatments on the drying efficiency and quality of Rosa damascena petals during hot air drying. All pretreatments significantly reduced the drying time and specific energy consumption (p < 0.05).

This study examines effect of ultrasound pretreatments (5, 10, and 15 min at 350 W) and freeze-drying (FD), spray drying (SD), and oven drying (OD) on functional and nutritional properties of soybean protein isolate (SPI) powder. Results indicated that lysine was most heat-sensitive amino acid and it underwent a significant reduction in ultrasound-pretreated dried samples, with a decrease of up to 13.65 % compared to control samples.

Thermal behaviour of lipids in short-lived seeds of Australian rainforest species.

National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation, United States Department of Agriculture, Fort Collins, Colorado  USA.

Background And Aims: Recent studies on desiccation-tolerant Australian rainforest seeds demonstrated that some were short-lived in storage. We sought to understand structural changes of storage lipids that might occur during storage at -20°C that could contribute to a short lifespan.

Methods: We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to examine exothermic and endothermic transitions during freezing and thawing in dry seed samples of 23 species.
