Article Abstract

Computational catalyst design requires identification of a metal and ligand that together result in the desired reaction reactivity and/or selectivity. A major impediment to translating computational designs to experiments is evaluating ligands that are likely to be synthesized. Here, we provide a solution to this impediment with our ReaLigands library that contains >30,000 monodentate, bidentate (didentate), tridentate, and larger ligands cultivated by dismantling experimentally reported crystal structures. Individual ligands from mononuclear crystal structures were identified using a modified depth-first search algorithm and charge was assigned using a machine learning model based on quantum-chemical calculated features. In the library, ligands are sorted based on direct ligand-to-metal atomic connections and on denticity. Representative principal component analysis (PCA) and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) analyses were used to analyze several tridentate ligand categories, which revealed both the diversity of ligands and connections between ligand categories. We also demonstrated the utility of this library by implementing it with our building and optimization tools, which resulted in the very rapid generation of barriers for 750 bidentate ligands for Rh-hydride ethylene migratory insertion.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Intermolecular [2 + 2] Cycloaddition of Unactivated Allenes and Alkynes with Unusual Regioselectivity.

J Am Chem Soc

September 2025

Department of Chemistry and the Hong Kong Branch of Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Tissue Restoration & Reconstruction, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR 999077, China.

Described here is an efficient protocol for intermolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of unactivated and unsymmetrical allenes and alkynes with unusual regioselectivity, counterintuitively favoring the most hindered isomer. CpRu(MeCN)PF served as a uniquely effective catalyst, providing diverse 3-alkylidenecyclobutenes with a broad scope and good functional group compatibility. Both experiments and DFT studies provided important insights into the mechanism, particularly the unusual regioselectivity.

The increasing pollution of water bodies from various industrial wastewater discharges has raised significant environmental concerns because these effluents contain toxic, nonbiodegradable compounds that pose serious risks to living organisms. In particular, the textile and pharmaceutical industries routinely use dyes that severely degrade water quality and lead to significant environmental issues. Therefore, effective removal of these dyes from industrial wastewater is crucial for mitigating pollution.

Hindered rotation and bending anharmonicity in aluminum alkyls: implications for methylaluminoxane thermodynamics.

Accurate thermodynamic calculations for aluminum alkyls require proper treatment of low-frequency vibrations poorly described by the harmonic approximation (HA). Here, we present a systematic investigation of hindered rotation and out-of-plane bending in aluminum trichloride (ATC) and its methyl derivatives, employing advanced computational methods to perform anharmonic entropy corrections, such as torsional eigenvalue summation (TES), the extended two-dimensional torsion method (E2DT), the multi-structural approximation with torsional anharmonicity (MS-T), and Fourier grid Hamiltonian (FGH). Our results reveal distinct structure-dependent behaviors: monomers exhibit near-free methyl rotations where the HA overestimates entropy by 20-30 J K mol, while dimers show more hindered rotations adequately described by the HA around room temperature.

Formation of chloroacetamides and chloroacetonitriles from chloroacetaldehydes and monochloramine reactions in drinking water.

The aldehyde addition reaction is recognized as a key pathway in the formation of haloacetamides (HAMs) in drinking water. In particular, the reaction between monochloramine and chloroaldehydes has been reported to proceed rapidly. However, the measured concentrations of haloaldehydes (HALs) in chloraminated water are often much higher than those of HAMs.

In the present work, alkaline transesterification converted waste household cooking oil into biodiesel, a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. After characterising oil and choosing the independent variables of the reaction (methanol-to-oil molar ratio, catalyst concentration, temperature, and stirring), three dependent variables were selected to analyse biodiesel production globally, considering technical, energetic and environmental aspects. Therefore, biodiesel yield, energy intensity, and green chemistry balance were chosen as responses.
