Article Abstract

Purpose: In the pedagogy of classical vocal singing, it can be difficult to determine the human voice fach, especially for the voice of aspiring vocalists. Hence, an objective metric-based system for the determination of the human voice is needed. In the present study, we investigated the anthropological and aerodynamic parameters for 60 professional singers with a professionally confirmed singing range.

Methods: Amongst the 60 included professional singers, there were ten participants each for sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, altos (female vocal fach), and tenors, baritones, basses (male vocal fach). Airflow measurements were recorded using spirometry whilst anthropological measurements were taken using CT scans. Appropriate statistical analyses were done using the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis H test with post-hoc tests and Bonferroni correction.  < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: Soprano singers, who have the highest pitch, were found to be the shortest and least heavy, whilst basses, who have the lowest pitch, were found to be tallest and heaviest amongst the study participants. Furthermore, sopranos had the smallest lung volumes while the basses had the largest lung volumes (raw spirometry measures). However, when normalized ratios were considered, no differences were observed. Finally, laryngeal size showed sexual dimorphism due to developmental changes.

Conclusions: A mix of anthropological and aerodynamic measurements may be useful to assist singers and vocal pedagogues to assess and determine voice types before the beginning of their vocal studies.

Introduction: Due to its tonal and syllabic structures, Chinese speakers may encounter unique difficulties when learning native Western operatic techniques. These challenges are particularly evident in balancing pitch control, subglottic pressure, and vowel production. The present study examines how native language influences vocal performance, using the Italian art song Caro mio ben as a test piece for singers from different language backgrounds.

Institute of Education, University College London, London, United Kingdom.

This exploratory, pre-post study considers the impact of collective singing within inner London Primary classrooms on young children's vocal development and sense of health and wellbeing. Data on singing and wellbeing were collected from children between the ages of five and seven before and at the conclusion of a whole class singing program. The program was led by professional singers from a charitable singing foundation who visited the school every 2 weeks over a period of 6 months (January 2024 to June 2024).

University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Otorhinolaryngology Clinic, Department of Phoniatrics, Zagreb, Croatia; The Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health, Osijek, Croatia.

Introduction: Professional singers are often described as vocal athletes due to the intense vocal demands of their profession, which may lead to functional impairments affecting their quality of life and career. Acoustic analysis provides an objective and quantitative method to assess voice quality. This study aimed to analyze the acoustic and aerodynamic voice characteristics in professional classically trained singers without subjective vocal complaints, as such a sample has been rarely studied.

This essay, written from the clinical experience of a physician specialized in palliative care, reflects on the need to reframe this discipline within both medical practice and social culture. Through a personal lens, and using the lyrics of Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina as a guiding thread, it argues that institutional and emotional resistance to palliative care - palliphobia - arises not only from structural barriers, but also from a medical narrative focused almost exclusively on cure. The text underscores the essential role of healthcare professionals in fostering this paradigm shift and the importance of reclaiming person-centered care: a way of seeing, listening, and accompanying, even when cure is no longer possible.

Department of Surgery, UMONS Research Institute for Health Sciences and Technology, University of Mons (UMons), B7000 Mons, Belgium.

: To investigate the reliability and validity of the Singer Reflux Symptom Score (sRSS), a new patient-reported outcome questionnaire documenting the severity of reflux symptoms in singing voice is proposed. : Amateur and professional singers consulting the European Reflux Clinic for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) symptoms and findings were prospectively recruited from January 2022 to February 2023. The diagnosis was based on a Reflux Symptom Score (RSS) > 13 and Reflux Sign Assessment (RSA) > 14.
