Large-scale, abrupt ecosystem change in direct response to climate extremes is a critical but poorly documented phenomenon. Yet, recent increases in climate-induced tree mortality raise concern that some forest ecosystems are on the brink of collapse across wide environmental gradients. Here we assessed climatic and productivity trends across the world's five Mediterranean forest ecosystems from 2000 to 2021 and detected a large-scale, abrupt forest browning and productivity decline in Chile (>90% of the forest in <100 days), responding to a sustained, acute drought. The extreme dry and warm conditions in Chile, unprecedented in the recent history of all Mediterranean-type ecosystems, are akin to those projected to arise in the second half of the century. Long-term recovery of this forest is uncertain given an ongoing decline in regional water balance. This dramatic plummet of forest productivity may be a spyglass to the future for other Mediterranean ecosystems.

The growth of e-health accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. An abrupt nationwide introduction of telemedicine and e-health services parallel to the announcement of the state of the epidemic in Poland resulted in their acceptance. Such services have remained with society after the pandemic and are now routine elements of healthcare interactions.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic introduced unprecedented disruptions to health care delivery, compelling rapid adaptations in anticoagulation management. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), already displacing warfarin due to their convenience and reduced monitoring requirements, appeared well-positioned for broader adoption during pandemic-induced lockdowns. This commentary examines whether the pandemic catalyzed a meaningful shift in anticoagulant prescribing patterns from vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) to DOACs, drawing on data from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches have the advantages of zero leakage current, abrupt switching characteristics, and harsh environmental capabilities. This makes them a promising component for digital computing circuits when high energy efficiency under extreme environmental conditions is important. However, to make NEM-based logic circuits commercially viable, NEM switches must be manufacturable in existing semiconductor foundry platforms to guarantee reliable switch fabrication and very large-scale integration densities, which remains a big challenge.

Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can generate and revise text with human-level performance. These models come with clear limitations, can produce inaccurate information, and reinforce existing biases. Yet, many scientists use them for their scholarly writing.

This study proposes a coupling analysis framework based on Copula-Bayesian, which fills the gap in the systematic risk research of large-scale water transfer projects. By constructing a joint annual runoff distribution model for the Yangtze River and Yellow River, combined with mutation point detection, periodicity analysis (Morlet wavelet) and frequency statistics of boom-bust encounter, the characteristics of hydrological variability under climate change were systematically evaluated.
