Article Abstract

Metallic surfaces with unidirectional anisotropy are often used to guide the self-assembly of organic molecules along a particular direction. Such supports thus offer an avenue for the fabrication of hybrid organic-metal interfaces with tailored morphology and precise elemental composition. Nonetheless, such control often comes at the expense of detrimental interfacial interactions that might quench the pristine properties of molecules. Here, hexagonal boron nitride grown on Ir(100) is introduced as a robust platform with several coexisting 1D stripe-like moiré superstructures that effectively guide unidirectional self-assemblies of pentacene molecules, concomitantly preserving their pristine electronic properties. In particular, highly-aligned longitudinal arrays of equally-oriented molecules are formed along two perpendicular directions, as demonstrated by comprehensive scanning tunneling microscopy and photoemission characterization performed at the local and non-local scale, respectively. The functionality of the template is demonstrated by photoemission tomography, a surface-averaging technique requiring a high degree of orientational order of the probed molecules. The successful identification of pentacene's pristine frontier orbitals underlines that the template induces excellent long-range molecular ordering via weak interactions, preventing charge transfer.

Understanding how conformational disorder influences relaxation pathways is essential for the rational design of molecular donor-acceptor systems. In this work, the authors investigate the role of conformational heterogeneity on intramolecular charge transfer in a covalently linked donor-acceptor dyad (P-D). Using excitation energy dependent transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy in various solvents, the authors find that stabilized planar conformers exhibit ultrafast intramolecular hole transfer to form a short lived, dark charge transfer state originating from band-edge excitation.

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) are pivotal in modern applications, with recent years seeing intensified research into their interplay with molecular layers as well as the potential of antiferromagnetic TMOs in spintronic applications. In this work we combine both approaches and investigate the adsorption of pentacene on the (001) surface of NiO. By employing a variety of methods such as scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory, we extract the geometrical arrangement of the molecules and their energy level-alignment.

A series of rare-earth metal-organic frameworks were synthesized based on a pentiptycene-octacarboxylic ligand. High-sensitivity and high-selectivity fluorescence sensing of 1-hydroxypyrene was achieved using the europium compound, with a rapid response time of merely 35 seconds and remarkable resilience to interferents.

Optical detection of magnetic resonance enables spin-based quantum sensing with high spatial resolution and sensitivity─even at room temperature─as exemplified by solid-state defects. Molecular systems provide a complementary, chemically tunable, platform for room-temperature optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR)-based quantum sensing. A critical parameter governing sensing sensitivity is the optical contrast─i.

Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) is used to theoretically and experimentally study a minimal three level "V" system (3LVS) with one ground state and two excited states coupled to common displaced harmonic oscillator modes. The third order non-linear optical response functions with frequency fluctuation correlation functions and frequency fluctuation cross correlation functions were derived using the displaced harmonic oscillator model to characterize the diagonal and cross-peaks. The two lowest vibronic transitions of a 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene (TIPS-Pn) molecule serve as a model system for the 3LVS considered above.
