Article Abstract

In this article we discuss current issues in the context of the four chosen subtopics for the meeting: dynamics and nano-rheology of interfacial water, electrified/charged aqueous interfaces, ice interfaces, and soft matter/water interfaces. We emphasize current advances in both theory and experiment, as well as important practical manifestations and areas of unresolved controversy.

Biominerals have unique morphologies and complex hierarchical microstructures, so the study of biomineralization has benefited greatly from the development of advanced microscopy and characterization tools. In my career, I witnessed a revolutionary change in the theories relating to biomineral formation mechanisms. While much of this was due to the advancements in imaging techniques, I present an argument to suggest that model systems played an important role in steering the biomineral community toward resolving the non-classical crystallization processes that are now understood to lie at the foundation of biological calcification processes.

Spiers Memorial Lecture: Recent advances (and challenges) in supramolecular gels.

Faraday Discuss

August 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716, USA.

Supramolecular hydrogels are physical hydrogels that are formed by non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interactions, and π-π stacking. Compared to typical, chemically cross-linked hydrogels, supramolecular networks commonly have stimuli-responsive behavior including reversibility and injectability, which are being widely studied for uses in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing. This review highlights recent developments in supramolecular network design and behavior focusing on the different possible molecular building blocks, including peptides, polysaccharides, synthetic polymers, and multicomponent systems.

This introductory lecture considers the wide range of subjects that involve asymmetric bilayer membranes. The organizers have chosen four themes that describe the current interest in asymmetric bilayers. The main part of this introductory lecture starts with the discovery from over 50 years ago that the plasma membrane of mature, human erythrocytes has different composition and properties in each leaflet of the plasma membrane.

Spiers Memorial Lecture: NMR crystallography.

Faraday Discuss

January 2025

Institut des Sciences et Ingénierie Chimiques, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland.

Chemical function is directly related to the spatial arrangement of atoms. Consequently, the determination of atomic-level three-dimensional structures has transformed molecular and materials science over the past 60 years. In this context, solid-state NMR has emerged to become the method of choice for atomic-level characterization of complex materials in powder form.
