Article Abstract

The Pumilio (Pum) RNA-binding protein family regulates post-transcription and plays crucial roles in stress response and growth. However, little is known about Pum in plants. In this study, a total of 19 genes were identified and classified into two groups in maize. Although each ZmPum contains the conserved Pum domain, the ZmPum members show diversity in the gene and protein architectures, physicochemical properties, chromosomal location, collinearity, cis-elements, and expression patterns. The typical ZmPum proteins have eight α-helices repeats, except for ZmPum2, 3, 5, 7, and 14, which have fewer α-helices. Moreover, we examined the expression profiles of genes and found their involvement in kernel development. Except for , genes are expressed in maize embryos, endosperms, or whole seeds. Notably, , , and exhibited dramatically high expression levels during seed development. The study not only contributes valuable information for further validating the functions of genes but also provides insights for improvement and enhancing maize yield.

Introduction: Current commercial cerebral oximeters only monitor the frontal lobes, however, some cerebrovascular territories may experience ischemia while others remain well perfused. This pilot study used a novel, high-density, dual-wavelength, time-resolved functional cerebral oximeter (Kernel Flow) with 2000 channels to assess the regional differences of cerebral oxygenation (StO2) in response to hypotension across different vascular territories during shoulder surgery in the beach chair position.

Methods: Twenty-seven adult patients were monitored, recording blood pressure, heart rate, regional cerebral oxygen saturation, and other vital parameters.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a globally significant crop, with its kernel sugar content playing a crucial role in determining nutritional quality and industrial applications. This study aimed to elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying sugar-related traits in maize kernels through genome-wide association studies.

Background: Radiation therapy is a common treatment for head and neck (H&N) cancers. Radiomic features, which are determined from biomedical imaging, can be effective biomarkers used to assess tumor heterogeneity and have been used to predict response to treatment. However, most studies employ only a single biomedical imaging modality to determine radiomic features.

Background: Carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) is a major contributor to cerebrovascular incidence and mortality, yet its etiology in non-dyslipidemic individuals remains poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental metal exposure may play a critical role in CAS development.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective matched case-control study involving 1290 non-dyslipidemic middle-aged and elderly individuals to examine the association between urinary metal exposure and CAS.

Background: Although human studies on the hazard that air pollution represents to male reproductive health, there are wide variations in exposure concentration, key components, semen quality indicators and the identification of susceptible exposure windows. The study aimed to further explore the relationship between air pollution and semen quality and the more accurate sensitive exposure windows.

Methods: We investigated a cross-sectional study consisting of 1554 fertile men from Nanjing, China and evaluated their exposure to PM, PM, CO, SO, NO and O in the air.
