This study presents the development of a portable fluorometer with a smartphone application designed to facilitate the early screening of chronic kidney and renal diseases by enabling the sensitive detection of urinary albumin. Utilizing a fluorescence-based aptasensor, the device achieved a linear calibration curve (0.001-1.5 mg/mL) with a linearity of up to 0.98022 and a detection limit of 0.203 µg/mL for human serum albumin (HSA). The analysis of 130 urine samples demonstrated comparable performance between this study's fluorometer, a commercial fluorometer, and the standard automated method. These findings validate the feasibility of the portable fluorometer and aptasensor combination as a reliable instrument for the sensitive and specific measurement of HSA in urine samples. Moreover, the fluorometer's portability offers potential applications in portable point-of-care testing, enhancing its utility in clinical settings for early disease screening.

Aptamers are gaining traction as ideal molecular recognition elements in diagnostics in lieu of antibodies due to the host of advantages associated with the former as compared to the latter. Their impressive functionalities have also revolutionized the field of point-of-care diagnostics that are conventionally incumbent upon antibodies, as is evident with the myriad of aptasensors developed thus far. Given the vastness of aptasensors reported in the literature, an overview of the recent progress of point-of-care aptasensors, ranging from paper, microfluidics, portable electrochemical, portable fluorometer, personal glucose meter to wearable aptasensors were provided in this study.

Polylepis reticulata is a vulnerable Andean páramo endemic tree species that grows at the highest altitude in the world. Despite having abundant available water year-round, P. reticulata trees face extreme environmental conditions, namely low temperatures and frequent persistent clouds and fog, which create extremes of solar irradiance.

Instead, FLAPs non-covalently bind dye ligands , which exhibit intrinsically low fluorescence in aqueous solutions, but become highly emitting upon FLAP binding. This protocol describes an algorithm to design split light-up aptamer sensors (SLASs) utilizing DAP-10-42, the most efficient DNA FLAP reported thus far.

Monitoring and controlling antiscalants, such as polyaspartate (PASP), in technical systems is essential to prevent scale formation and optimize inhibitor application. We developed a using a portable fluorometer equipped with optical fiber sensors for real-time PASP detection in various environmental and industrial settings. We quantified the impact of solution matrix effects, including pH, temperature, ionic strength, and turbidity, on fluorescence signals, emphasizing the need for on-site calibration.
