Objective: To investigate the effect of adding education to trunk and hip exercises in patients with patellofemoral pain (PFP).
Design: A randomized controlled trial.
Setting: Research laboratory.
Participants: Sixty patients with PFP (N=60) were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (education followed by trunk and hip exercises, n=30) or a control group (trunk and hip exercises, n=30).
Interventions: Both groups received 8 weeks of trunk and hip exercises, while patients in the experimental group participated in 3 prior education sessions.
Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was pain; secondary outcomes were pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, function, and muscle strength. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, after 8 weeks (post-intervention), and 3 months post-intervention (follow-up).
Results: No significant between-group differences were observed for pain outcome post-intervention. The experimental group showed superiority over the control group in the improvement of pain catastrophizing (mean difference: -2.32; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.059 to 0.028) and kinesiophobia (mean difference: -3.56; 95% CI -1.067 to -0.035) at post-intervention. In the experimental group, improvements were maintained at follow-up assessment for all outcomes, except muscle strength.
Conclusion: Adding education to trunk and hip exercises was associated with greater improvements in psychological outcomes than trunk and hip exercises alone after the intervention. Education can be incorporated when designing trunk and hip exercises for patients with PFP.

The Bulgarian split squat (BSS) is a unilateral exercise that emphasizes hip extension more than knee extension, compared to other squat variations. This study aimed to (1) empirically verify the existence of the rear leg-derived moment (M)-a theoretically plausible but previously untested external resistive hip moment acting against the net hip extension moment (M) of the front leg-and (2) examine how stance width and forward trunk-leaning angles affect M during the BSS. Nine trained male participants performed bodyweight BSS under two stance conditions (wide and narrow) and three trunk-leaning conditions (additional, natural, and reduced forward lean).

To review musculoskeletal disabilities and rehabilitation in adults with thalidomide embryopathy (TE), the authors reviewed the literature related to musculoskeletal disability, quality of life (QOL) and rehabilitation intervention in adults with TE, obtained through a PubMed search, and their experience in clinical practice with Japanese individuals. Through literature search, 25 studies were included for this review. Literature search results and the authors' experiences revealed that, in adults with TE, upper limb disabilities included neuropathy, mainly due to carpal tunnel syndrome; finger pain due to tenosynovitis; and symptoms caused by osteoarthritis, mainly in the shoulders.

[Purpose] This study examined gait asymmetry through analyzing gait trajectories and asymmetry of the lower limb moment of the frontal plane in normal and blindfolded gaits. [Participants and Methods] A three-dimensional motion analyzer and force plates were used to determine the thoracic lateral deviation and asymmetrical ratios of the upper and lower thoracic shapes in the standing position of 20 healthy adult men. The progression angle pelvic and thoracic rotation angles; and asymmetry of the hip, knee, and ankle moments in the frontal plane in full- and no-vision gaits were measured.
