Medical cannabis legalization and the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

J Cannabis Res

September 2025

Department of EconomicsMA in Applied Economics, Lebanese American University, P.O. Box: 13-5053, Beirut, Lebanon.

Amidst the global shift toward cannabis legalization, this study examines medical cannabis (MC) sales as an indicator of economic activity and innovation. It explores associations between MC sales, and variables including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis prevalence, and gross domestic product (GDP), using a fixed effects (FE) panel regression model. It also evaluates associations between cannabis legalization and MC sales over time using a dynamic Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach with multiple time periods.

Identifying levels of alcohol use disorder severity in electronic health records.

Subst Abuse Treat Prev Policy

September 2025

Centre for Interdisciplinary Addiction Research (ZIS), Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Martinistraße 52, 20246, Hamburg, Germany.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is conceptualized as a dimensional phenomenon in the DSM-5, but electronic health records (EHRs) rely on binary AUD definitions according to the ICD-10. The present study classifies AUD severity levels using EHR data and tests whether increasing AUD severity levels are linked with increased comorbidity.

Methods: Billing data from two German statutory health insurance companies in Hamburg included n = 21,954 adults diagnosed with alcohol-specific conditions between 2017 and 2021.

Background: People living in prison face exceptionally high prevalence rates of tooth decay, periodontal disease, and poor oral health-related quality of life. Despite its importance, various aspects of oral healthcare in prison settings remain understudied. The present study investigates the barriers and facilitators associated with providing and utilizing oral health services in prison settings, drawing on insights from prison health experts, managerial and custodial staff, healthcare providers, and individuals with lived experience of imprisonment.

CuCo-Embedded Nitrogen-Doped Carbon as a Bifunctional Catalyst for Efficient Rechargeable Zinc-Ethanol/Air Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

September 2025

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies, Hunan Normal University, Changsha 410081, China.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in conventional zinc-air batteries (ZABs) involves a complex multielectron transfer process, leading to slow reaction kinetics, high charging voltage, and low energy efficiency. To address these limitations, a zinc-ethanol/air battery (ZEAB) system that strategically replaces the OER with the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) possessing a lower thermodynamic potential has been proposed. Herein, a bimetallic catalyst CuCo-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon (CuCo-20%-1), derived from a Cu/Co/Cd co-coordinated metal-organic precursor, is synthesized and exhibits an excellent performance for both EOR and ORR.

Association of oxidative balance score with hypertension in children and adolescents: NHANES 1999-2018.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

July 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Women and Children's Hospital, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, 10# Zhenhai Road, Xiamen, China. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Adolescent hypertension is a growing public health concern, with oxidative stress emerging as a pivotal factor in its development. Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) consists of 20 components, including 16 nutrients (such as carotenoids, riboflavin, copper, etc.) and 4 lifestyle factors (physical activity, BMI, alcohol consumption, and smoking), with higher scores indicating increased exposure to antioxidants.
