Since its discovery, the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has become the epicenter of public health concern. This was mainly attributed to the complexity of COVID-19 that resulted in variable disease progression with some developing asymptomatic infections, some suffering mild to moderate infections that resolved without the need for hospitalizations, and a few infected persons developing severe infections that required intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mechanical ventilation. The COVID-19 pandemic spread globally, affecting billions of people and killing millions.

Objectives: To characterise the chorioretinal (CR) manifestations of West Nile virus (WNV) infection using multimodal imaging (MMI).

Methods: Retrospective cohort study including 37 patients with confirmed WNV infection hospitalised at a single centre (July-September 2024). All underwent comprehensive ophthalmological evaluations, including visual acuity, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fundoscopy, and multimodal imaging: fundus photography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography when clinically indicated.

Accurate modeling of lung parenchymal biomechanics is critical for understanding respiratory function and improving diagnoses. Traditional hyperelastic models capture tissue deformation but miss essential physiological interactions. This study evaluates an experimentally informed poroelastic model (Birzle's formulation) against hyperelastic-only models within a finite element framework.

CFD Evaluation of Far-UVCand Air Cleaning Technologies in Classrooms without Mechanical Ventilation.

J Hazard Mater

September 2025

Architectural Engineering Department, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA. Electronic address:

Far-UVC systems and air cleaners are effective strategies for controlling airborne pathogen transmission, particularly in densely occupied spaces with insufficient ventilation, such as school classrooms. This study evaluates the disinfection performance and ozone (O) formation of different far-UVC systems and air cleaners in a standard-sized classroom using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results show that ceiling-mounted far-UVC systems reduce airborne pathogen exposure by up to 30 % more than upper-room and wall-mounted configurations, based on intake fractions and room-average concentrations.

Purpose: Conformal dose distributions in proton radiotherapy promise to reduce normal tissue toxicity such as radiation-induced pneumonitis, but this has not been fully realized in clinical trials. To further investigate dose and toxicity, we employ voxel-based normal tissue evaluation techniques such as ventilation maps throughout treatment. We hypothesize that ventilation change after 1 week of treatment (WK1) predicts for ventilation change at the end of treatment (EOT).
