Article Abstract

Rashba spin-orbit coupled systems are an important class of materials noted for diverse fundamental and applied phenomena. Recently, the emergence of non-linear Hall effect under conditions of time-reversal symmetry has been discovered in materials with broken inversion symmetry. In this work, we study the second- and third-order Hall response in Rashba systems with hexagonal warping. Starting with a low-energy model, we obtain the analytic expressions and discover the unique dipole profile in Rashba systems with hexagonal warping. Furthermore, we extend the analysis using a realistic tight-binding model. Next, we predict the existence of a third-order Hall effect in these systems, and calculate the Berry connection polarizability tensor analytically. We also show how the model parameters affect the third-order conductivity. Our predictions can help in the experimental realization of Berry curvature multipole physics in Rashba materials with hexagonal warping, and provide a new platform for engineering the non-linear Hall effects.

Metal additive manufacturing processes induce residual stress in as-built components. These residual stresses are detrimental to part quality as they can induce defects such as warping and delamination. In some cases, when complex components are built, residual stress can even cause a build job to fail due to the recoater crashing into the distorted part.

The irradiation of topological insulator surface with elliptically polarized light modifies the topological properties in a phase-dependent manner impacting the Floquet Chern number which is a crucial topological invariant associated with such driven systems. Employing Floquet theory in presence of hexagonal warping term in the Dirac fermion Hamiltonian under off-resonant conditions, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that highlights distinct features in the Floquet-Dirac surface states. Specifically, we identify a helicity and ellipticity-dependent mass term in the quasi-static Hamiltonian, breaking time reversal symmetry.

In a 2D electron system (2DES) the breaking of the inversion, time-reversal and bulk crystal-field symmetries is interlaced with the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) triggering exotic quantum phenomena. Here, epitaxial engineering is used to design and realize a 2DES characterized simultaneously by ferromagnetic order, large Rashba SOC and hexagonal band warping at the (111) interfaces between LaAlO, EuTiO, and SrTiO insulators. The 2DES displays anomalous quantum corrections to the magneto-conductance driven by the time-reversal-symmetry breaking occurring below the magnetic transition temperature.

We study the effects of magnetisation on the properties of the doped topological insulator of theBi2Se3family with nematic superconductivity. We found that the direction of the in-plane magnetisation fixes the direction of the nematicity in the system. The chiral state is more favourable than the nematic state for large values of out-of-plane magnetisation.

Hexagonal warping effects on Bloch oscillations in proximitized Rashba systems.

Bloch oscillations (BOs) in Rashba systems, taking into account the effects of hexagonal warping and proximity-induced band gap, are reported. We find that in addition to real-space trajectories, the group and Berry velocities of Bloch electrons exhibit novel BOs which strongly depend on the crystal momentum. This oscillatory motion is affected significantly by variations in the strength of hexagonal warping and the proximity-induced band gap, originating from the substantial changes in the energy spectrum induced by these factors.
