Active removal of space debris is an emerging technology aimed at sustaining space activity in Earth orbit by mitigating the risk of collisions between operational satellites and debris. Utilizing a bi-directional magnetic nozzle (MN) radiofrequency (rf) plasma thruster has been proposed to remediate and remove debris from the Earth orbit, where the debris is decelerated by continuously exerting a force to the debris by a plasma beam ejected from the thruster, and zero net force exerted to the thruster is simultaneously maintained by ejecting a second plasma beam to the opposite direction, maintaining the distance between the satellite and the debris. Previous laboratory experiment has demonstrated bi-directional plasma ejection from a single MN rf plasma thruster having two open source exits for symmetric magnetic field configuration having fairly straight magnetic field lines in the insulator source tube wound by a rf loop antenna.

Purpose: This phantom-based study aimed to identify acceptable velocity encoding (VENC) settings for flow measurements in straight-tube and aortic aneurysm phantoms using 4-D flow magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

Methods: A pulse flow pump was connected to 2 types of plastic phantoms (straight-tube and aortic aneurysm) to create steady and pulsatile flow, respectively. The validity of flow measurements with 4-D flow MR imaging using 2 VENC settings (16 and 32 cm/s) was examined, using flow meter measurements as the gold standard.

Temporary and reversible underwater adhesion is important for a number of robotic applications, including picking up objects, facilitating locomotion in confined environments, and attaching to surfaces during periods of observation. Here, we present a starfish-inspired tube foot composed of a soft hydrogel mouth and a rigid stem, fabricated by integrating two serially bonded cylindrical components with distinct mechanical properties. Upon swelling, the initially straight hydrogel cylinder undergoes a selective shape transformation into a soft, cupped pad that deforms to stretch and spread upon contact, enabling effective adhesion to target surfaces.

Minimally invasive surgery is regarded as a safer approach than open craniotomy to removing deep intracerebral mass lesions such as hematomas. It is usually performed by introducing a straight suction tool, sometimes combined with accessories for tissue debridement and irrigation, into the brain. Since collateral trauma to healthy tissue is proportional to the diameter of the tools, slender tools with small diameters are desired.

High-pressure shock waves of several tens of MPa are of importance in many applications, such as material fabrication and testing, combustion chemistry and metrology. Controlled and predetermined shock waves can be generated by a shock tube, where the sudden expansion of a high-pressure driver gas into a low-pressure driven gas caused by the instantaneous opening of a connection between two sections produces a compression shock wave that propagates through the driven gas. The reflection of the shock wave from the end wall of the driven section of the shock tube generates a rapid pressure rise, which in conventional straight shock tubes with a uniform cross-section is limited to a few MPa.
