Mesoscale oceanographic features influence the composition of zooplankton. Cyclonic eddies can promote upwelling and production of gelatinous zooplankton, which play critical roles in ocean biogeochemical cycling. We examined variation in assemblages of thaliaceans (salps, doliolids and pyrosomes) among mesoscale oceanographic features at the tropical-temperate boundary of the East Australian Current (EAC) in Spring 2019 and Autumn 2021. The influence of cyclonic eddies was examined in a large offshore cyclonic eddy in 2019 and a newly formed frontal eddy in 2021. Pyrosomes were most abundant in the offshore EAC jet, and salps and doliolids were most abundant in coastal features, including within eddies that were transported offshore. In 2019, increased 4-fold over 8 days in the large cyclonic eddy, and in 2021, doliolids increased > 50-fold over 2 weeks in a chlorophyll-rich coastal eddy while abundances of other thaliaceans remained unchanged or decreased. Correlations between abundances of thaliaceans and chlorophyll-a concentrations across the 102 samples collected during both voyages revealed that doliolids occupy a wider range of chlorophyll-a concentrations than salps. Our observations indicate that doliolids thrive in productive shelf environments, salps occur in less productive shelf waters and pyrosomes are most abundant in oligotrophic waters of the south Coral Sea.

Identifying contemporary population structure and genetic connectivity among seabird populations is essential for developing conservation plans for threatened species, especially as factors like philopatry, non-breeding behavior, and oceanographic features might limit gene flow between isolated populations and influence changes in genetic diversity over time. Here, we characterize the population structure of three closely related crested penguin species in New Zealand: Tawaki (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus; Fiordland penguins), erect-crested penguins/tawaki nana hī (Eudyptes sclateri), and eastern rockhopper penguins/tawaki piki toka (Eudyptes filholi). Whereas tawaki populations appear to be stable, the erect-crested and eastern rockhopper penguin populations have seen dramatic declines in the recent historical record.

This paper reports on measurements of out-of-plane arrivals from an airgun transect over the north slope of the Atlantis II Seamount Complex in the North Atlantic. The data were collected by a set of three near-bottom single-channel acoustic recorders. Time delay analysis is applied to assess the directionality of anomalous arrivals in the received time series that are interwoven between the in-plane bottom-surface and multiple bottom-surface reflected paths.

Pelagic fish have evolved specialized biogenic multilayer reflectors composed of stacks of intracellular anhydrous guanine crystals separated by cytoplasm, giving notorious silvery appearance to their skin. While the reflective properties of guanine crystals and their utility for fish camouflage have been shown in other fish species, this is the first evaluation on fish species from the southern hemisphere, and from the Humboldt current system. This is one of the most productive systems on earth, having particular oceanographic conditions such as upwelling, and thus under strong selection pressures.
