Ultraviolet (UV) B irradiation induces protein modification, especially the conformational rearrangement of proteins, and is therefore promising as a non-thermal and non-chemical functionalization technique. Nevertheless, UVB irradiation introduces radicals and oxidizes side chains resulting in the loss of food quality. Thus, assessing the UVB irradiation-based functionalization of β-lactoglobulin (BLG) versus its oxidative degradation is of interest. UVB irradiation of up to 8 h was successfully applied to loosen the rigid folding of BLG and increase its flexibility. Thereby, the cysteine at position 121 and hydrophobic regions became surface-exposed as indicated by the increase in accessible thiol groups and increased surface hydrophobicity. Furthermore, we demonstrated the cleavage of the "outer" disulfide bond C-C by LC-MS/MS after tryptic digestion of BLG. The 2-h-irradiated BLG showed adequate conformational rearrangement for protein functionalization while being minimally oxidized.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced photodamage remains a critical dermatological challenge, necessitating natural alternatives to synthetic photo-protectants. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-photodamage potential of fermented Sphagnum moss filtrate (SMFF) through integrated metabolomic, cellular and in vivo analyses. Untargeted metabolomics identified 933 metabolites, with fermentation significantly enriching taurine, glycine derivatives and phenolic acids while activating glycine/serine and taurine/hypotaurine metabolic pathways critical for redox homeostasis.

Background: Narrowband-ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy is an effective treatment for psoriasis in patients who have failed topical regimens or those who desire to avoid systemic treatment. Despite its regular use in non-white individuals, NB-UVB treatment response for psoriasis in skin of color (SOC) has not been systematically reviewed.

Through a comprehensive analysis combining network pharmacology prediction and transcriptomics, this study systematically explained the multi-target mechanism of Cyanotis arachnoidea(CA) Gel in improving melasma. A melasma model was induced in female SD rats by progesterone injection combined with ultraviolet B(UVB) irradiation for 40 consecutive days, while the blank control group was only fed routinely. After successful model establishment, the rats were randomly divided into five groups and administered different doses of CA ethanol extract gel(high, medium, and low doses) or arbutin Gel(positive control), which were applied once daily for 28 consecutive days.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPhotosensitivity is central to cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and dermatomyositis (DM), but the mechanisms linking UVB exposure to tissue-specific autoimmunity are poorly defined. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, UVB provocation, and in vitro modeling, we identify MMP9⁺ CD14⁺ myeloid cells as critical mediators of photosensitivity. These cells expand significantly in lesional skin, produce IFN-b, and colocalize with cytotoxic CD4⁺ T cells at the dermal-epidermal junction.
