Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication after major surgery and has significant implications for long-term outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and impact of postoperative AKI (PO-AKI) in adults who underwent major abdominal surgeries in 2019 at Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile. The primary focus was on the association between PO-AKI and 2-year mortality, along with other postoperative complications and hospital-related outcomes.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant global health concern, with >1 million cases annually in the United States, making it a leading cause of preventable hospital-related deaths. Advances in genetic research, particularly genome-wide association studies, have demonstrated the polygenic nature of VTE by identifying numerous single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with susceptibility. The polygenic risk score (PRS), which aggregates the effects of multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms, has emerged as a valuable tool for improving VTE risk assessment.

Background: Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr) are at high risk of infectious complications, and effective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes need to be developed. We aimed to review the available evidence on the effectiveness and safety of different strategies to optimise antibiotic use in SOTr.

Methods: In our systematic review and meta-analyses, we searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and SCOPUS for original research articles published up to 06 March 2025.

Single-cell spatial transcriptomics can provide subcellular resolution for a deep understanding of molecular mechanisms. However, accurate segmentation and annotation remain a major challenge that limits downstream analysis. Current machine learning methods heavily rely on nuclei or cell body staining, resulting in the significant loss of both transcriptome depth and the limited ability to learn spatial colocalization patterns.

Background: Intraoperative fractures are a significant complication of bipolar hemiarthroplasty for hip fractures in older patients. Femoral geometry classified as Dorr C is associated with a high risk of intraoperative fractures when a cementless stem is used. However, the impact of the duration from injury to surgery on the risk of intraoperative fractures remains unclear.
