Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors, presents significant therapeutic challenges due to its multifactorial etiology, clinical heterogeneity, and frequent comorbidities. To address these complexities, animal models have become indispensable tools for unraveling ASD pathogenesis and evaluating potential interventions. This review synthesizes recent advances across three pivotal research domains-neuroimaging biomarkers, metabolic dysregulation, and etiological mechanisms-while providing a critical evaluation of animal models, including rodent and non-human primate (NHP) paradigms developed through pharmacological induction, spontaneous mutations, and CRISPR-based gene editing.

We present the outcome of a decade-long research programme targeting the relationship between individual differences in metaphor skills and Theory of Mind (ToM), based on the use of the Physical and Mental Metaphors (PMM) task alongside the Strange Stories task in neurotypical children throughout middle childhood. A meta-analysis conducted on our published and unpublished articles, including 500 children aged 8-12 years, showed that metaphor and ToM are significantly associated, even when controlling for vocabulary. This association peaks around the age of 9 years and fades away with increasing age.

Premature survivors are at risk for motor and socio-cognitive impairments, implicating cerebellar dysfunction. This Integrative Review introduces the Socio-Cognitive Integration Theory (SCIT), a culturally embedded framework that conceptualizes mental health as the outcome of alignment between personal cognitive appraisals and culturally sanctioned social roles. Challenging the universality of Western-centric models, SCIT emphasizes the significance of religious narratives, familial obligations, and social expectations in shaping psychological resilience in Muslim-majority societies. Drawing on an integrative literature review of empirical and conceptual studies, the review synthesizes data from six Islamic-Asian countries-including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, Afghanistan, and Pakistan-highlighting how role-appraisal congruence significantly influences emotional stability and adaptive functioning.
