Sleep is known to be affected by season changes in a temperate climate. Temperature changes are known to affect sleep directly, but in this context, season-related changes in the circadian rhythm may play an important role as well. The objectives of this study were to verify the effect of season and temperature on sleep parameters of elderly French subjects and to focus on the sleep-wake cycle.

The determination of melatonin levels in saliva represents one of the key methods for assessing the timing of the central circadian clock in humans, both in research and clinical settings. Melatonin levels in saliva are typically determined in a laboratory setting by RIA or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presented a serious challenge to the routine, safe assessment of melatonin in saliva samples. However, SARS-CoV-2 present in biological fluids can be inactivated by exposure to temperatures of at least 55-60°C for 30 min and the aim of this study was to assess the validity of applying a pretreatment heating step to saliva samples being prepared for melatonin determination using the Novolytix Radioimmunoassay (RK-DSM2).

Gene expression is dynamic and varies at different stages of processes. The identification of gene profiles with temporal-specific expression patterns can provide valuable insights into ongoing biological processes, such as the cell cycle, cell development, circadian rhythms, or responses to external stimuli such as drug treatments or viral infections. However, currently, no database defines, identifies or archives gene profiles with temporal-specific expression patterns.

The circadian clock regulates biological cycles across species and is crucial for physiological activities and biochemical reactions, including cancer onset and development. The interplay between the circadian rhythm and cancer involves regulating cell division, DNA repair, immune function, hormonal balance, and the potential for chronotherapy. This highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm for cancer prevention and treatment.
