Article Abstract

Adolescence is a period of heightened affective and social sensitivity. In this review we address how this increased sensitivity influences associative learning. Based on recent evidence from human and rodent studies, as well as advances in computational biology, we suggest that, compared to other age groups, adolescents show features of heightened Pavlovian learning but tend to perform worse than adults at instrumental learning. Because Pavlovian learning does not involve decision-making, whereas instrumental learning does, we propose that these developmental differences might be due to heightened sensitivity to rewards and threats in adolescence, coupled with a lower specificity of responding. We discuss the implications of these findings for adolescent mental health and education.

Perinatal depressive symptoms and child temperament at two years: The moderating role of child sleep duration.

J Affect Disord

September 2025

Background: Perinatal depression has been linked to higher negative affectivity (NA) in children, though the strength of this association is variable. Infant sleep, a known protective factor, may moderate this relationship though this has not been tested.

Objective: To examine whether within-person changes in depressive symptoms across pregnancy and postpartum were linked to child NA, and whether infant sleep duration moderated these effects.

Algorithms of emotion: A hybrid NLP analysis of neurodivergent Reddit communities".

Online communities such as Reddit offer neurodivergent individuals a unique space to express emotions, seek psychosocial support, and negotiate identity outside conventional social constraints. Understanding how these communities articulate and structure emotional discourse is essential for inclusive technology design. This study employed a hybrid natural language processing (NLP) framework that integrates lexicon-based sentiment analysis (VADER) with transformer-based topic modeling (BERTopic).

Grounded in developmental intergroup theory, which highlights the role of essentialist thinking in the emergence of prejudice, this study examined whether reducing children's gender essentialism could decrease prejudice against speakers with gender-nonconforming (GN) voices. A total of 162 children aged 8-12 years participated in the study. The intervention group (N = 81) received three lessons illustrating diversity in sex-related traits and behaviors in the animal kingdom to challenge essentialist beliefs about gender roles, expression, and biological sex, whereas the control group received comparable lessons without gender-related content.

In the literature, it has been described that affective commitment and transformational leadership are directly related to occupational happiness. In this sense, the present study begins with the premise that subjective happiness may enhance the effectiveness of transformational leadership. For this purpose, the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) were applied to a non-probabilistic sample of 215 business administration students in Colombian universities.

The neurodevelopmental disorder fragile X syndrome (FXS) results from hypermethylation of the FMR1 gene, which prevents production of the FMRP protein. FMRP modulates the expression and function of a variety of proteins, including voltage-gated ion channels, such as hyperpolarization-activated and cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels, which are integral to rhythmic activity in thalamic structures. Thalamocortical pathology, particularly involving the mediodorsal thalamus (MD), has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders such as FXS.
