Studies suggest a possible association between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and bladder cancer (BCa) risk, though this remains unclear. Secreted frizzled-related protein (sFRP) is also linked to BCa, with some DNA viruses potentially regulating its expression. This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization analysis to explore the causal relationship between EBV infection, BCa risk, and the mediating role of sFRP.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the genetic factors that may increase the risk of severe external apical root resorption (EARR) during orthodontic treatment in a Korean population using extreme phenotype analysis.
  • Researchers analyzed DNA from 77 patients who had two maxillary premolars extracted and classified them into groups based on varying levels of EARR observed through radiographs.
  • They discovered significant associations between severe EARR and specific genetic variants (SNPs) in several genes, potentially aiding in creating predictive tools for identifying patients at risk for severe root resorption during orthodontics.

Subsequently to the publication of the above article, an interested reader drew to the authors' attention that two pairs of data panels featured in Figs. 2E and 6D, portraying the results from cell invasion and migration assay experiments, appeared to contain overlapping sections, such that data which were intended to show the results from differently performed experiments had apparently been derived from a smaller number of original sources. The authors were able to re‑examine their original data (which was also presented to the Editorial Office), and realized that errors has been made in the compilation of Fig.

Black and Hispanic American patients frequently develop earlier onset of multiple sclerosis (MS) and a more severe disease course that can be resistant to disease modifying treatments. The objectives were to identify differential methylation of genomic DNA (gDNA) associated with disease susceptibility and treatment responses in a cohort of MS patients from underrepresented minority populations. Patients with MS and controls with non-inflammatory neurologic conditions were consented and enrolled under an IRB-approved protocol.
