Contemporary pharmacology dating back to the late 19th/early 20th centuries has benefitted largely from the incorporation of metal complexes. Various biological attributes have been successfully realized using metal/metal complex-based drugs. Among anticancer, antimicrobial, and antiviral applications, anticancer applications have extracted the maximum benefit from the metal complex, Cisplatin. The following review has compiled the various antiviral benefits harnessed through inputs from metal complexes. As a result of exploiting the pharmacological aspects of metal complexes, the anti-COVID-19 deliverables have been summarized. The challenges ahead, the gaps in this research area, the need to improvise incorporating nanoaspects in metal complexes, and the need to test metal complex-based drugs in clinical trials have been discussed and deliberated. The pandemic shook the entire world and claimed quite a percentage of the global population. Metal complex-based drugs are already established for their antiviral property with respect to enveloped viruses and extrapolating them for COVID-19 can be an effective way to manipulate drug resistance and mutant issues that the current anti-COVID-19 drugs are facing.

The failure of the therapeutic administration of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes to prevent oxidative stress has fostered the development of metal complexes that are capable of mimicking their activity. In the present work, two new pyridine azacyclophane ligands capable of coordinating Cu and Fe to give rise to mimetics with high activities toward disproportionation of the superoxide anion or hydrogen peroxide, depending on the metal ion, have been prepared. Although the Cu complexes have some of the highest SOD activities reported to date, they are completely inactive toward HO disproportionation.

The correlation between Pb species formation and bioaccessibility in alkaline, smelter-impacted soil co-contaminated with other toxic trace elements after treatment with phosphorus-containing amendments was investigated. The soil was collected near a former copper smelter, El Paso, Texas. It contained Pb (3200 ± 142 mg kg), As (254 ± 14 mg kg), and Cd (110 ± 8 mg kg).

The detection of biological nanoparticles (NPs), such as viruses and extracellular vesicles (EVs), plays a critical role in medical diagnostics. However, these particles are optically faint, making microscopic detection in complex solutions challenging. Recent advancements have demonstrated that distinguishing between metallic and dielectric signals with twilight off-axis holographic microscopy makes it possible to differentiate between metal and biological NPs and to quantify complexes formed from metal and biological NPs binding together.

The nanoscale environment within the void spaces of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can significantly influence the photoredox catalytic activity of encapsulated visible-light photoredox catalysts (PCs). To compare two isostructural PC@In-MOF systems, three cationic Ru(II) polypyridine complexes were successfully encapsulated within the mesoscale channels of the anionic framework of InTATB (HTATB = 4,4',4''--triazine-2,4,6-triyltribenzoic acid), which features a doubly interpenetrated framework structure. This encapsulation yielded three heterogenized visible-light PCs, RuL@InTATB, where L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), or 2,2'-bipyrazine (bpz).

Fluorescent N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes are useful for various chemical and biological applications. In this study, we developed a simple strategy to synthesize BODIPY-linked NHC metal complexes involving Ag, Cu, Ni, and Pd. The synthesis began with the preparation of BODIPY-imidazolium salt as a precursor ligand.
