is a brown seaweed with applications in the food, pharmaceutic, and cosmetic industries. Among its most valuable bioactive compounds are the pigment fucoxanthin and polysaccharides (e.g., fucoidans). In this study, we profiled the photosynthetic pigments and carbohydrates of from six locations along the Ílhavo Channel in the Iberian coastal lagoon of Ria de Aveiro, Portugal. Photosynthetic performance (Fv/Fm), pigment, and carbohydrate concentrations were similar between locations, despite differences in environmental factors, such as salinity and periods of exposure to desiccation. Concentration of total carbohydrates (neutral sugars + uronic acids) averaged 418 mg g dw. Fucose was the second most abundant neutral sugar, with an average concentration of 60.7 mg g dw, indicating a high content of fucoidans. Photosynthetic pigments included chlorophylls and , β,β-carotene, and the xanthophylls fucoxanthin, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin. Concentrations of fucoxanthin were higher than those reported for most brown macroalgae, averaging 0.58 mg g dw (65% of total carotenoids). This study indicates that from Ria de Aveiro is a valuable macroalgal resource for aquaculture companies operating in the region, with considerable potential to yield high-value bioactive compounds.

Melatonin (MT) is a growth regulator that influences anthocyanin synthesis during plant growth. However, the regulation mechanism of MT on the coloration of plum peels remains unclear. Here, the effects of MT on the anthocyanin accumulation and coloration in Chinese plum peels were examined after MT (100 μmol/L) or water (control) treatment.

Preharvest nutrient accumulation and the related metabolic processes play a crucial role in determining the quality and shelf life of broccoli, which in turn influence its freshness, nutritional value, and overall marketability. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying these processes remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of preharvest florets application of 5 mM arginine (ARG) five days prior to harvest, on nutrient accumulation, pigment metabolism, and the maintenance of postharvest quality in broccoli heads.

Natural pigments have high safety and are widely used in food, cosmetics and medicine. However, at present, sources of natural pigments are extremely scarce, especially those from microorganisms. In this study, we isolated a fungus from a polar soil sample that produces purplish-red pigment and is safe and non-toxic.
