Article Abstract

Zebra mussels (ZM), Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771), are one of the most aggressive invasive species. ZM have a strong bidirectional impact on phytoplankton because of their high nutrient excretion rates and high grazing pressure. Furthermore, the interactions between excretion and selective grazing are related to the trophic status of a waterbody and could cause unpredictable changes in phytoplankton. We performed three types of experiments: (i) bottom-up where we measured ZM excretion rates; (ii) top-down where we analyzed the effects of ZM on phytoplankton taxonomic structure via grazing in different trophic conditions; (iii) mesocosm experiment where we estimated the combined top-down and bottom-up effects of ZM on phytoplankton assemblages under different trophic conditions. Our first experiment confirmed high excretion rates of dissolved nutrients (PO and NH) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by ZM. The other experiments revealed selective grazing by ZM, where diatoms were mostly selectively rejected, while green algae were preferred. In the top-down experiment, ZM decreased the total biomass of phytoplankton, while in mesocosm experiments where top-down and bottom-up controls acted simultaneously, we observed increased phytoplankton biomass mainly through increases in filamentous green algae. Our experiments show that ZM can influence phytoplankton through a combination of bottom-up and top-down effects that vary with trophic state.

Dynamic micro/nano-structured surfaces play pivotal roles in biological systems and engineering applications. Despite considerable progress has been made in fabricating precisely ordered architectures, achieving controlled motion in top-down fabricated structures remain a formidable challenge. Here, we introduce an advanced dynamic micron-nano optical platform featuring hierarchical microscale wrinkles integrated with ordered nanoscale arrays.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is an emerging tool in multiple myeloma that detects and quantifies monoclonal proteins in the peripheral blood with sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than conventional serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation. Both intact light chain (top-down) and clonotypic peptide (bottom-up) MS approaches have demonstrated sensitivity comparable to-or even surpassing-BM-based assessments using next generation flow cytometry or sequencing. However, due to the delayed clearance of paraproteins, MS may be less informative for early response assessment, underscoring the need to define the optimal timing for evaluation.

Since the 2013-2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak, Guinea has faced recurrent epidemics of viral hemorrhagic fevers. Although the country has learned from these epidemics by improving its disease surveillance and investigation capacities, local authorities and stakeholders, including community actors, are not sufficiently involved in the disease-emergence response. As a result, measures are not fully understood and have failed to engage local stakeholders.

Redefining cognitive neurodynamics through transdisciplinary innovation.

NeuroHeuristic Research Group, University of Lausanne, UNIL Chamberonne Internef 138.1, 1015 Lausanne, VD Switzerland.

This paper introduces the concept of -a novel transdisciplinary paradigm designed to advance cognitive neurodynamics by integrating insights from molecular biology, computing, behavioral science, and clinical neuroscience. Contrasted with the traditional reductionist approach rooted in classical determinism, neuroheuristics emphasizes a flexible, problem-solving methodology for investigating brain function across multiple levels of complexity. The paper explores the epistemological interplay among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors in brain development and pathology.
