Article Abstract

Compared with rodents, pigs are closer to humans in terms of anatomy, metabolism and physiology, so they are ideal animal models of human diseases and xenotransplantation donors. In addition, as one of the most important livestock in China, pigs are closely related to our lives in terms of breeding improvement, disease prevention and animal welfare. In this review, we mainly summarize the research progress and future application of genetically modified pig models in the fields of xenotransplantation, molecular breeding and human disease models. We wish to take this opportunity to raise the awareness of researchers in related fields on cutting-edge technologies such as gene editing and understand the significance of genetically modified pig models in life science research.

Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides/proteins that can have narrow or broad inhibitory spectra and remarkable potency against clinically relevant pathogens. One such bacteriocin that is extensively used in the food industry and with potential for biotherapeutic application is the post-translationally modified peptide, nisin. Recent studies have shown the impact of nisin on the gastrointestinal microbiome, but relatively little is known of how abundant nisin production is in nature, the breadth of existing variants, and their antimicrobial potency.

Plants balance resource energy allocation between growth and immunity to ensure survival and reproduction under limited availability. This study reveals that rice cultivars with elevated sucrose levels boost resistance to the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae by accumulating the phytoalexin sakuranetin, regulated by the transcription factor STOREKEEPER (OsSTK). OsSTK binds to the promoter region of OsNOMT (Naringenin-7-O-Methyltransferase) to drive sakuranetin biosynthesis.

Background: Cardiac laminopathies, associated with mutations in the LMNA gene, are a rare inherited disorder characterized by a broad range of clinical manifestations. There are currently no data on the association between supraventricular re-entrant tachycardias and LMNA-related cardiomyopathy.
