Pleural empyema is a recognized complication of pneumonia and causes significant morbidity in children. Insertion of a small-bore chest drain shortens hospital admission but can be associated with pneumothorax. This is usually assumed to be caused by a bronchopleural fistula or a displaced drain and therefore under pressure, requiring surgical intervention.

Respiratory diseases pose a significant global health burden, prompting the exploration of novel therapeutic strategies. This narrative review consolidates existing knowledge and critically examines the evolving role of medical gases, ozone, argon, and nitric oxide (NO), in respiratory medicine. Based on recent literature, it highlights how these gases, originally used for their physicochemical properties, have now undergone a "functional crossover," revealing their broad therapeutic potential.

Respiratory fistulas remain clinically challenging in endoscopic treatment due to the absence of convenient non-compressive sealing materials. Here, we developed an in situ self-fused powder adhesive (PP powder) to address this limitation. This material integrates the adaptive conformability of hydrogel microparticles with the pressure-resistant sealing capability of bulk hydrogels via water-triggered self-assembly.

Background: Pediatric pulmonary cystic echinococcosis (PCE) frequently necessitates surgical intervention, but the optimal surgical technique remains a subject of debate. Total peri-adventitial cystectomy (TPAC) is a radical surgical approach with potential benefits, but its use is restricted by technical challenges and concerns about complications. This single-center retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of TPAC compared to conventional surgical techniques in managing pediatric PCE.
