Article Abstract

The clinical success of a drug delivery system turns back to performing experiments with more reliable data. The dialysis bag has been one of the most employed technologies to monitor drug release from nanocarriers, membranes, and scaffolds. Unfortunately, this technology has several challenges regarding the accuracy of the obtained results. In this study, the development of a new system by integrating a microfluidic device and dialysis bag named "MF-dialysis" was carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the reported data. The release study was performed focusing on two drug delivery systems: (i) nanocarrier: extract-loaded soy protein isolate nanoparticle and (ii) sodium alginate film loaded with the nanocarrier. The obtained nanocarrier was analyzed by SEM, DLS, and zeta potential. The final experimental data were modeled using SigmaPlot software. Based on the results, two distinct but fitted models for the dialysis bag (power model, = 0.99) and MF-dialysis (exponential model, = 0.95) were obtained. MF-dialysis approved that after a while, NPs and films showed more drug release compared to the dialysis bag. To sum up, the MF-dialysis system can be a good candidate for a quick and more reliable study of drug delivery systems.

The release study is a standard tool for the development, evaluation, and control of dosage forms. In the case of traditional drug delivery systems, it is conducted in accordance with the established principles available in the European and American Pharmacopoeias or guidelines proposed by registration agencies. The problem is the study of modern carriers, not yet described in compendia, which require adjustments to traditionally used methods.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of amino acid peritoneal dialysis (AA-PD) in improving nutritional status among continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients with malnutrition in a real-world setting.

Methods: A prospective self-control study was conducted across five hospitals in China. Patients aged 18-75 years with malnutrition [serum albumin < 35 g/L, prealbumin < 300 mg/L, or Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) score > 7] were enrolled.

Introduction: Icodextrin enhances ultrafiltration (UF) in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) but is restricted to 1 bag/d, according to regulatory authorities. The Double-Icodextrin Dose (DIDo) study is a prospective randomized trial investigating the superiority and safety of using 2 bags/d versus 1 bag/d of icodextrin to extend incremental (3 bags/d) continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) duration in older incident patients.

Methods: After a 2-month "run-in" period, the patients were randomized to 2 icodextrin ("double dose") + 1 glucose or 1 icodextrin ("single dose") + 2 glucose dialysates daily.

Background: Effective endodontic treatment relies on eliminating microbial infections and preventing reinfections. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)) is widely used as an intracanal medicament due to its high pH and antibacterial activity. However, its limited solubility and penetration reduce its efficacy.
