Recent studies in biology and ecology show striking convergences with process philosophy (PP). Biologists today are debating the real nature of evolution and of life itself, which is increasingly considered as a set of interrelated processes rather than a set of tangible species and material lineages. This perspective of focusing on changes can also be found with ecologists and environmental ethicists, whose studies feed into as well as draw on PP principles.

Pufferfish exhibit the smallest vertebrate genomes, making them ideal models for investigating evolutionary patterns and processes that affect genome size. While the Takifugu rubripes genome was fully sequenced two decades ago, key evolutionary drivers remain elusive. We sequenced 10 pufferfish genomes and generated 35 transcriptomes and 13 methylomes to understand genomic evolutionary mechanisms.

Targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) is a cutting-edge treatment approach in oncology that combines the molecular precision of targeted agents with the effect of radiotherapy to selectively deliver cytotoxic radiation to cancer cells. Research efforts from the past few decades have led to a diverse molecular landscape of TRT and have provided lessons for further rational development of targeted radiopharmaceuticals and expansion of the clinical applications of this treatment modality. In this Review, we discuss TRT in the context of therapeutic approaches currently available in oncology, describe the broad range of established and emerging targets for TRT including innovative approaches to exploit vulnerabilities presented by the tumour microenvironment, and address the challenges for clinical translation and molecular optimization.

The origin and phylogenetic distribution of symbiotic associations between nodulating angiosperms and nitrogen-fixing bacteria have long intrigued biologists. Recent comparative evolutionary analyses have yielded alternative hypotheses: a multistep pathway of independent gains and losses of root nodule symbiosis vs. a single gain followed by numerous losses.

Large-scale geological processes shape microbial habitats and drive the evolution of life on Earth. During the Oligocene, convergence between Africa and Europe led to the opening of the Western Mediterranean Basin, a deep-ocean system characterized by fluid venting, oxygen depletion, and the absence of benthic fauna. In this extreme, inhospitable seafloor environment, fusiform objects known as Tubotomaculum formed, whose origin has long remained controversial.
