Article Abstract

The concept of critical ionization fraction has been essential for high-harmonic generation, because it dictates the maximum driving laser intensity while preserving the phase matching of harmonics. In this work, we reveal a second, nonadiabatic critical ionization fraction, which substantially extends the phase-matched harmonic energy, arising because of the strong reshaping of the intense laser field in a gas plasma. We validate this understanding through a systematic comparison between experiment and theory for a wide range of laser conditions. In particular, the properties of the high-harmonic spectrum versus the laser intensity undergoes three distinctive scenarios: (i) coincidence with the single-atom cutoff, (ii) strong spectral extension, and (iii) spectral energy saturation. We present an analytical model that predicts the spectral extension and reveals the increasing importance of the nonadiabatic effects for mid-infrared lasers. These findings are important for the development of high-brightness soft x-ray sources for applications in spectroscopy and imaging.

Quantum coherences play a central role in a broad range of fields, including functional energy materials, biological systems, and molecular quantum information science. Coherences encode critical information about the phase and dynamics of a system, and their interaction with its environment. Particularly, the ultrafast charge transfer process between electron donor and acceptor species in functional energy materials is influenced by vibronic coherences.

The transport of energetic particles in the heliosphere is profoundly influenced by interactions with coherent structures in the turbulent magnetic field of the solar wind, particularly current sheets. While prior studies have largely relied on idealized turbulence models, this work quantifies the role of solar wind current sheets (quasi-1D plasma structures characterized by strong magnetic field gradients) in driving pitch-angle scattering. We present an analytical Hamiltonian framework coupled with test particle simulations, informed by observational data from the ARTEMIS and Wind missions, to model particle dynamics through current sheets with realistic parameters.

Photorelaxation via Water-Mediated Electron Transfer in Fully Solvated Heptazine.

Department of Physics, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, SC 88040-900, Brazil.

Theoretical photochemistry simulations often treat the solvent as static, with only the solute evolving out of equilibrium. However, in polar solvents like water, dynamic solvent effects critically influence photorelaxation. We perform nonadiabatic excited-state molecular dynamics simulations of heptazine (CNH) fully solvated in water and identify a previously unrecognized solvent-mediated photorelaxation pathway.

Benign Hydrogen Vacancy in Bromide-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites.

J Phys Chem Lett

Bromide-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have emerged as one of the outstanding photovoltaic materials. We demonstrate using density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations that detrimental hydrogen vacancy (V) in iodide-based OIHPs turns out to be benign in bromide-based OIHPs. Benign V in MAPbBr [MA = CHNH] is mainly attributed to the absence of deep trap states.

Role of quantum coherence in chirped dynamic nuclear polarization.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) is transforming nuclear magnetic resonance and MRI by significantly enhancing sensitivity through the transfer of polarization from electron spins to nuclear spins via microwave irradiation. However, the use of monochromatic continuous-wave irradiation limits the efficiency of DNP for systems with heterogeneous, broad electron paramagnetic resonance lines. Broadband techniques such as chirp irradiation offer a potential solution, particularly for Solid Effect (SE) DNP in such cases.
