Article Abstract

As part of a project aimed at promoting the use of (Vaill.) L. (field marigold, Asteraceae) phytocomplexes in cosmeceutical formulations, the chemical composition in apolar specialized metabolites is herein elucidated. Furthermore, the screening of the cytotoxicity of the apolar extracts was evaluated in order to underline their safety as functional ingredients for cosmetics. After dissection of organs (florets, fruits, leaves, bracts, stems, and roots), ultrasound-assisted maceration in -hexane as an extracting solvent allowed us to obtain oil-like mixtures, whose chemical composition has been highlighted through a UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS approach. Twenty-nine metabolites were tentatively identified; different compounds, among which the well-known poly-unsaturated fatty acids, and oxylipins and phosphatides were detected for the first time in genus. The screening of the dose-response cytotoxicity of the apolar extracts of highlighted the concentration of 10 μg/mL as the most suitable for the formulation of cosmeceutical preparations. Sera enriched with leaf and fruit apolar extracts turned out to have the best activity, suggesting it can be used as a new source in skin care thanks to their higher content in fatty acids.

The saponin-rich plant extracts are mixtures of various surface-active and non-surface-active compound substances. Their exact composition depends on the type of plant and its part from which they were extracted. In this study, we analyze the wetting properties of the extract obtained by boiling soapwort ( L.

In this study, astaxanthin extract was obtained from deep-water pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) shell wastes by ultrasound-assisted extraction method using six different organic solvents, characterized and compared with commercial astaxanthin standard. Astaxanthin extractions were performed under different time conditions (2 and 4 h) using selected apolar/polar solvents (petroleum ether, hexane, isopropanol, ethanol, methanol, acetone). All extracts were quantitatively tested by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Jasmonates are a group of plant signaling compounds that control defense mechanisms and modulate growth and development in response to environmental challenges. The protocol in this chapter describes a simple and rapid quantification of the most commonly studied jasmonate, jasmonic acid (JA), and also both its precursor 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (OPDA) and JA-isoleucine (JA-Ile) the bioactive form, in the abscission zone (AZ) and the mesocarp tissue of oil palm fruits. These tissues are lipid-rich and difficult to analyze because of high levels of triglycerides (TAGs).

Detailed knowledge about phenolic compounds of Citrus fruits and derived juices is important for investigations into Citrus product authentication as well as for their potential health benefits. We present an HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-HR-MS/MS method for the identification and simultaneous quantitation of more than 50 compounds ranging from polar phenolic acids over flavonoid glycosides to apolar coumarins, psoralens, and polymethoxyflavones in lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit juices. Hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives mainly comprised esters with aldaric acids, N-p-coumaroylputrescine, and N-feruloylputrescine.
