Viscoelastic surfactants (VESs) have significant importance for stimulation of low-permeable reservoirs and acid diversion applications to effectively enhance hydrocarbon productivity. VESs offer lower residues, complete gel production, and lower formation damage that make them suitable candidates for hydraulic fracturing applications. In this research work, the synthesis of two new zwitterionic gemini surfactants and together with previously known amidosulfobutaine () has been achieved. Evaluation of viscosity behavior of neat surfactants in CaCl solutions at varied temperatures and shear rates did not show any upsurge in their viscosities. Nevertheless, a mixture of surfactants and in combination with displayed a significant increase in viscosity, transforming the solution into a highly viscous gel. At a fixed shear rate of 35 s and under different temperatures, solutions of the mixture of surfactants and displayed viscosities ranging from 4.34 to 354.3 cPs (81-fold enhancement). Likewise, viscosities of formulations based on mixing and under identical experimental conditions ranged from 3.89 to 290 cPs (74-fold enhancement). The viscofying stability tests at 90 °C at a shear rate of 35 s of mixed surfactant formulations revealed no appreciable change in their viscosities for up to 1 h. Moreover, temperature-dependent experiments suggested an increase in the viscosity with an increase in temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that these surfactants are thermally stable, with no appreciable loss of mass up to 300 °C. The viscoelastic properties of these surfactants suggest their potential and utility in well stimulation for enhanced oil recovery.

To investigate the specific performance enhancement of oilfield surfactants by using sodium p-aminobenzenesulfonate as a connecting group, cationic surfactant N,N-dimethyl-N-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)dodecan-1-aminium (DDPA) and zwitterionic gemini surfactant sodium 4-[bis(3-(dodecyldimethylamino)-2-hydroxypropyl)amino]benzenesulfonate (DDBS) were synthesized. The oil recovery performance of these surfactants was compared, revealing that DDBS outperforms DDPA in thermal stability, wettability, adsorption, and resistance to temperature and salinity variations, as well as surface/interface activity, except for emulsification. Core flooding experiments, simulating the conditions of the Xinjiang oilfield, demonstrated that DDBS can achieve the same enhanced oil recovery effect at a concentration that is 1/15 of that of DDPA.

The determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) is a crucial factor when evaluating surfactants, making it an essential tool in studying the properties of surfactants in various industrial fields. In this present research, we assembled a comprehensive set of 593 different classes of surfactants including, anionic, cationic, nonionic, zwitterionic, and Gemini surfactants to establish a link between their molecular structure and the negative logarithmic value of critical micelle concentration (pCMC) utilizing quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) methodologies. Statistical analysis revealed that a set of 14 significant Mordred descriptors (SlogP, GATS6d, nAcid, GATS8dv, GATS4dv, PEOE_VSA11, GATS8d, ATS0p, GATS1d, MATS5p, GATS3d, NdssC, GATS6dv and EState_VSA4), along with temperature, served as appropriate inputs.

To date, locking the shape of liquids into non-equilibrium states usually relies on jamming nanoparticle surfactants at an oil/water interface. Here we show that a synthetic water-soluble zwitterionic Gemini surfactant can serve as an alternative to nanoparticle surfactants for stabilizing, structuring and additionally lubricating liquids. By having a high binding energy comparable to amphiphilic nanoparticles at the paraffin oil/water interface, the surfactant can attain near-zero interfacial tensions and ultrahigh surface coverages after spontaneous adsorption.

The formation of aggregates, which are widely used in the field of biochemistry and the medical industry, was studied with different compositions of alkyl betaine gemini surfactant (CAb) in conjugation with chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ). The results were compared with those of a single-chain zwitterionic surfactant (CDmCB) of the same type with CPZ. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods were used to distinguish the aggregates for the CPZ/CAb system in aqueous solutions above a certain mole fraction of the drug CPZ ( = 0.

A label-free light-scattering sensor for berberine determination was developed based on Gemini zwitterionic surfactant as logic devices. Amphiphilic phosphodiesters quaternary ammonium nanoparticles (PQANPs) with bionic phosphate ester structure were selected as a model for mimicking cell membrane. PQANPs self-assembled and formed the micelle structure, emitting strong light-scattering signal.
