The effect of monovalent cations on a cell-free transcription-translation (TX-TL) system is examined using a luciferase assay. It is found that the potency for all ions analyzed here is in the order Rb > K > Cs > Na ≈ Li > (CH ) N , where Rb is most efficient at promoting TX-TL and the ions of Li , Na , and (CH ) N exhibit an inhibitory effect. Similar promotion/inhibition effects are observed for cell-free TL alone with an mRNA template.

A series of six quinary rare-earth sulfides CeEuNaSiS, CeEuKSiS, CeEuRbSiS, CeEuCsSiS, CeEuAgSiS, and CeEuCuSiS were obtained in an alkali iodide flux using the boron-chalcogen mixture (BCM) method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the high quality single crystals that were grown; their elemental compositions were confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system in the noncentrosymmetric space group 6.

Animal opsins are G protein-coupled receptors that have evolved to sense light by covalently binding a retinal chromophore via a protonated (positively charged) Schiff base. A negatively charged amino acid in the opsin, acting as a counterion, stabilizes the proton on the Schiff base, which is essential for sensitivity to visible light. In this study, we investigate the spectroscopic properties of a unique class of opsins from a reef-building coral belonging to the anthozoan-specific opsin II group (ASO-II opsins), which intriguingly lack a counterion residue at any of established sites.

The development of molecules that interact with G-quadruplex (G4) sequences requires effective evaluation methods. Several techniques are currently available, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and mass spectrometry (MS), fluorescence using FRET-melting, G4-fluorescent intercalator displacement assay (G4-FID) and affinity chromatography. Among these, CD spectroscopy is gaining prominence due to its lower material requirements, faster experimentation and quicker data processing.
