Background: Urban expansion into natural habitats has increased human interactions with wild terrestrial and aquatic species, leading to a rise in animal-related injuries. These incidents often result in complex infections, posing major public health challenges. This study examines the epidemiology, therapeutic interventions, and clinical outcomes of infections from non-domesticated animal injuries in the Mornington Peninsula, Australia.

Background: Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency is a well-known cause of hematologic and neurological disorders; however, its presentation can be highly variable, leading to diagnostic challenges. The etiology is diverse: while the most common cause is dietary insufficiency, other potential causes include malabsorption syndromes, autoimmune gastritis, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic infections, and genetic defects. Clinical presentation varies significantly, ranging from clinically silent macrocytosis to life-threatening anemia or pancytopenia.

This report describes the first successful administration of ravulizumab, a C5 complement inhibitor, in the treatment of life-threatening intravascular hemolysis (IVH) caused by delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction (DHTR) in a 22-year-old woman. The patient developed acute IVH with severe anemia and hemodynamic instability seven days after receiving a blood transfusion for posthemorrhagic anemia following a missed abortion. Laboratory investigations revealed anti-e and anti-Jka alloantibodies consistent with DHTR.

Antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases are common, can involve any organ system, and pose a large burden for patients and healthcare systems. Most antibody-mediated diseases are mediated by IgG antibodies. Selective targeting of pathogenic antibodies is an attractive treatment option which has already proven to be effective in antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis, maternal-fetal alloimmune cytopenias, and immune thrombocytopenic purpura.
