Article Abstract

Background: Assessing the size of illicit drug markets is an important activity of many government agencies; however, the expenditure-based method for estimating market size relies on the relatively untested assumption that the cash value of the most recent purchase is representative of the average purchase amount. Using panel data, we test the representativeness of the most recent, modal and median purchase compared to the average purchase amount.

Methods: Data were drawn from a prior study that collected daily transaction-level purchase data from a sample of 120 people who were using heroin regularly. The same study participants completed two distinct two-week waves of data collection, separated by six months. T-tests and bootstrapping were used to detect differences within each wave between the average cash value of participant heroin purchases and the cash value of their most recent, modal and median heroin purchases.

Results: In both waves, we found (a) no evidence that the expected value of the most recent purchase differs from the expected value of the average purchase, and (b) the expected values of the modal and median purchases are smaller than the expected value of the average purchase. These results imply that estimates of total market size based on the modal or median purchase will suffer from a significant downward bias, but that estimates based on the most recent purchase will be unbiased.

Conclusions: We provide evidence in support of using the most recent (but not the modal or the median) purchase to estimate market size for heroin.

Background: Molecular aberrations have been incorporated into tumour classification guidelines of meningioma. TERT-promoter (TERTp) mutation is associated with worse prognosis and is designated a WHO grade 3 biomarker. However, it remains unclear whether TERTp mutation is context-dependent, with other co-occurring genetic alterations potentially driving its association with prognosis.

This systematic review evaluates the integration of radiomics, artificial intelligence (AI), and molecular signatures for diagnosing and prognosticating bone and soft tissue tumors (BSTTs). Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we analyzed 24 studies from 1,141 initial records across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Our findings reveal that while radiomics-AI pipelines are well-developed for BSTT assessment - particularly using MRI (72% of studies) and CT (25%) with machine learning classifiers like random forests (42%) and CNNs (17%) - molecular data integration remains virtually absent.

Background: Ki-67 labelling index (LI), a critical marker of tumor proliferation, is vital for grading adult-type diffuse gliomas and predicting patient survival. However, its accurate assessment currently relies on invasive biopsy or surgical resection. This makes it challenging to non-invasively predict Ki-67 LI and subsequent prognosis.

Glyoxalase 1 Inducer, -Resveratrol and Hesperetin-Dietary Supplement with Multi-Modal Health Benefits.

Antioxidants (Basel)

August 2025

Diabetes Research Center, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation, Doha P.O. Box 34110, Qatar.

A dietary supplement, -resveratrol and hesperetin (tRES+HESP)-also known as GlucoRegulate-induces increased expression of glyoxalase 1 (Glo1) by activation of transcription factor Nrf2, countering accumulation of the reactive dicarbonyl glycating agent, methylglyoxal. tRES+HESP corrected insulin resistance and decreased fasting and postprandial plasma glucose and low-grade inflammation in overweight and obese subjects in a clinical trial. The aim of this study was to explore, for the first time, health-beneficial gene expression other than Glo1 induced by tRES+HESP in human endothelial cells and fibroblasts in primary culture and HepG2 hepatoma cell line and activity of -resveratrol (cRES) as a Glo1 inducer.

Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE), Monash University, Caulfield, VIC 3145, Australia; Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Royal Children's Hospital, Parkville, VIC 3052, Australia. Electronic address:

Objective: Hedges and intensifiers are linguistic strategies that are used to indicate respect for an individual's face needs, particularly their desire to feel autonomous or part of a social group. This study aimed to investigate the use of such linguistic strategies by pharmacy students and their impact on communication grades in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) focusing on shared decision making and uptake of pharmacists' recommendations by patients and prescribers.

Methods: An analytical observational retrospective cohort of OSCE videos across poor, average and good grades was conducted.
