Article Abstract

Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) for high-grade gliomas using 5-aminolevulinic acid has become a new standard of care for neurosurgeons in several countries. In this video the authors present the case of a man with glioblastoma who underwent FGS in which similar images of the operative field were acquired alternating between the microscope and a new commercially available headlight, facilitating the comparison of visualization quality between the two devices. The authors also review some of the principles of fluorescence-guidance surgery that may explain the improved brightness and contrast that they observed when using the headlamp versus the microscope. The video can be found here: https://stream.cadmore.media/r10.3171/2021.10.FOCVID21181.

Introduction: Status epilepticus is a life-threatening pediatric emergency with high morbidity and mortality, where rapid benzodiazepine administration is critical. However, the optimal agent and route of administration remain subjects of ongoing evaluation, with direct head-to-head comparison between lorazepam and midazolam remaining limited.

Methods: An aggregate-level meta-analysis was conducted on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of midazolam against lorazepam in managing pediatric status epilepticus.

Background: The advent of immunotherapies and targeted treatments has improved survival for some people with metastatic cancer but also increased prognostic uncertainty. To inform clinician-patient communication and supportive care, this study explored uncertainty-related coping among people with metastatic uveal melanoma (mUM) - a disease for which treatments have emerged especially suddenly.

Methods: A qualitative approach was taken using semi-structured interviews.

Objectives: Health technology assessment bodies are increasingly using cost comparison (cost-minimization) analysis to manage rising demand. Such an approach requires demonstration of clinical similarity. Although head-to-head comparisons from equivalence or noninferiority studies are usually accepted as evidence of similarity, guidance is lacking on when equivalence may be assumed from indirect treatment comparison (ITC), either quantitative or qualitative.

Purpose: This study aims to systematically review and perform a meta-analysis to compare the diagnostic performance of fibroblast activation protein inhibitors (FAPI) radiopharmaceuticals and 2-deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]FDG) in gynaecological cancers.

Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE was conducted and updated to October 25, 2024, to identify clinical studies evaluating FAPI and [F]FDG PET/CT or PET/MR in patients with gynaecological cancer. Quality was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies).
