Article Abstract

The most appropriate renal function estimation equation to predict drug clearance is a matter of debate. In this study, we compare the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology collaboration (CKD-EPI) and the Cockroft-Gault (CG) equations to predict amoxicillin and cloxacillin clearance among hospitalized patients receiving high doses of these antibiotic treatments. This study aimed to compare different equations used to predict amoxicillin and cloxacillin clearance among hospitalized patients receiving amoxicillin or cloxacillin treatments outside the intensive care unit. Data from 128 patients contributing 268 plasma samples was analyzed, and correlations between the equations and the amoxicillin and cloxacillin antibiotic clearance rates were calculated. We found a correlation between antibiotic clearance and all the renal function estimation equations, CG being the best, with a R of 0.35 for amoxicillin and 0.29 for cloxacillin (compared to 0.26 and 0.21 for MDRD and 0.12 and 0.24 for CKD-EPI). CG should be preferentially used as a proxy for amoxicillin and cloxacillin drug clearance, but the use of completely different tools such as therapeutic drug monitoring could help individualize antibiotic dosage.

Background: Breastfeeding is essential for child health and survival, yet breastfeeding mothers often require medications to manage postpartum and chronic conditions, raising concerns about potential infant safety. Limited research has been undertaken on medication practices during lactation, especially in low-resource settings like Uganda. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of medicine use, evidence about safety, and factors that influence medicine use among breastfeeding women in Kampala, Uganda.

Unlabelled: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a global public health threat, exacerbated by rising drug-resistant strains of (Mtb). DacB1, a D,D-carboxypeptidase critical in Mtb peptidoglycan biosynthesis, is a promising target for β-lactam antibiotics (BLs), which remain underutilized in TB treatment. Dual BL therapy may enhance efficacy by inactivating multiple targets within the peptidoglyan synthesis pathway.

is a significant bacterial pathogen responsible for a wide range of diseases in both humans and animals. This study aimed to investigate nucleotide sequence variations, gene expression patterns, and serum biomarkers, including acute phase proteins (APPs), hormonal fluctuations, and iron profile parameters in sheep affected by pneumonia. Additionally, the study focused on the isolation and characterization of from pneumonic sheep, with particular emphasis on the prevalence of methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains.

Objective: To evaluate how antimicrobial consumption was influenced by increasing the frequency of meetings in which the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) team conducted prospective audit and feedback (PAF).

Materials And Methods: Retrospective cohort study comparing consumption in DDD per 1000 beds-day and DDD per 1000 admissions across groups of anti-infectives, antibacterial groups, agents against methicillin-susceptible (anti-MSSA agents)/agents against methicillin-resistant (anti-MRSA agents), antibiotics targeting sensitive Gram-negative bacteria/antibiotics targeting resistant Gram-negative bacteria and antimicrobial agents, during two comparative periods of ASP activity (2 weekly meetings in 2023 versus 1 weekly meeting in 2022).

Results: Comparing 2023 to 2022: antibacterials for systemic use consumption increased in DDD per 1000 beds-day (+0.
