Ornamental nursery plants are both a major agricultural industry in the U.S. and a major feature of the urban and suburban landscape. Interest in their relationship with pollinators is two-fold: the extent to which they provide a nutritional benefit to pollinators, and the extent to which they have the potential to harm pollinators by exposing them to pesticide residues in nectar and pollen. We identified plant genera as sources of trapped pollen collected by honey bee colonies located at commercial ornamental plant nurseries in Connecticut in 2015 and 2018 and quantified the percentage of pollen volume collected from each genus for each weekly sample over two seasons. Plant genera grown at these nurseries, particularly , and , contributed substantially to pollen volume during weeks 23-27 of the year. Among the genera not grown in nurseries, was also important during weeks 23 and 24, and was important in both frequency and quantity throughout the season. was a major component of pollen volume from weeks 28-36 in both sites, even though cropland was not over 11% of land cover at either site.

Is a herd of wildebeest better thought of as a series of individual animals, each with its own glorious and unmanageable volition, or as a field of moving arrows? Are the morphogen gradients that set up the coordinate systems for embryonic anterior-posterior patterning a smooth and continuous concentration field or instead a chaotic collection of protein molecules each jiggling about in the haphazard way first described by Robert Brown in his microscopical observations of pollen? Is water, the great liquid ether of the living world, a collection of discrete molecules or instead a perfectly continuous medium with a density of ≈1000 kg/m? In this article, I will argue that these questions pose a false dichotomy since there are many different and powerful representations of the world around us. Different representations suit us differently at different times and it is often useful to be able to hold these seemingly contradictory notions in our heads simultaneously. Indeed, mathematics is not only the language of representation, but often is also the engine of reconciliation of such disparate views.

Plant domestication primarily targets traits of direct human interest, such as fruit and seed characteristics; however, its indirect effects on other traits, including floral morphology and rewards (nectar and pollen), remain less understood. In this study, we investigated how domestication has influenced floral traits and rewards in domesticated and wild species of the genus . We compared three domesticated and three wild species in an experimental plot.

Nectar robbing typically reduces nectar availability to pollinators, damages flower structure, and/or induces secondary robbing. Consequently, it may reduce pollen deposition and seed set, increase pollination efficiency and outcrossing, and/or not affect reproduction in some species. However, spatiotemporal variations in nectar robbing and their effects on plant reproduction have received little attention.

Optical microscopy encompasses a wide array of instruments and applications, each designed with the goal of obtaining the best possible image. However, achieving that goal depends on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, choice of microscope sample and calibration standards. Alignment or calibration standards are mandatory to obtain the best image possible.

New protein-rich flour blends from legumes are increasingly being processed for gluten-free bakery products, which may increase the risk of IgE-mediated sensitization through inhalation exposure. In the described case of a 29-year-old baker, work incapacity occurred due to respiratory complaints following exposure to various gluten-free baking ingredients. Occupation-related sensitization to "chestnut pea flour" (flour from lightly roasted and ground yellow peas) was identified, while the patient showed no IgE sensitization to five other ingredients.
