Article Abstract

Although SARS-CoV-2 can infect human placental tissue, vertical transmission is rare. Therefore, the placenta may function as a barrier to inhibit viral transmission to the foetus, though the mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we confirmed the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 genome in human placental tissue by in situ hybridization with antisense probes targeting the spike protein; tissue staining was much lower when using sense probes for the spike protein. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first evidence directly indicating inefficient viral replication in the SARS-CoV-2-infected placenta. Additional studies are required to reveal the detailed mechanisms.

Impact of chorionic villus sampling volume on time to result and pregnancy management.

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

December 2025

Section of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA.

Objective: To evaluate the association between low-volume chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and delay in patient care.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent CVS from 8/19/2019 to 12/31/2022 in a single center. The exposure was low-volume CVS, defined as less than 15 mg of sample.

Bromuconazole, a widely used triazole-based pesticide, effectively controls fungal diseases in agriculture. Bromuconazole cause a potential toxic effect to non-target organisms and can have a negative impact on reproductive health in women, due to its long half-life and bioaccumulation ability. This study identifies the cytotoxicity and adverse effects of bromuconazole on trophoblastic cells (HTR-8/SVneo) and human endometrial cells (T HESCs), which are involved in implantation processes.

Aims: Preterm delivery (PTD) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Accurate prediction is crucial for optimizing clinical outcomes, particularly in women with a short cervix. Although fetal fibronectin (FFN) is widely used to predict PTD, placental alpha-microglobulin-1 (PAMG-1) has gained attention for its potential to improve predictive accuracy.

46,XY/46,XY Chimerism: Prenatal Presentation and Postnatal Outcome.

Mol Genet Genomic Med

September 2025

Laboratory Medicine and Genetics, Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Human chimerism is rare, and most prevalent with discordant chromosomal sex. We report a male 46,XY/46,XY chimera, born through a spontaneously conceived pregnancy to a healthy 32-year-old G1P0 Indian, African, and Scottish female and her 34-year-old healthy Chinese partner. The prenatal presentation and postnatal outcomes are described.

Modeling the human maternal-fetal interface.

Stem cells and organoids enable the modeling of various aspects of human development in vitro, yet integrating them to study maternal-fetal interactions remains challenging. In this review, we explore the current in vitro models of the endometrium, placenta, and embryo and identify key challenges associated with their integration, including the establishment of morpho-functional complexity, spatiotemporal coordination, and appropriate in vivo benchmarking. We propose an interdisciplinary perspective that emphasizes a shift from "building blocks" to "building interactions.
