Human angiogenin (ANG) is a 14-kDa ribonuclease involved in different pathophysiological processes including tumorigenesis, neuroprotection, inflammation, innate immunity, reproduction, the regeneration of damaged tissues and stress cell response, depending on its intracellular localization. Under physiological conditions, ANG moves to the cell nucleus where it enhances rRNA transcription; conversely, recent reports indicate that under stress conditions, ANG accumulates in the cytoplasmic compartment and modulates the production of tiRNAs, a novel class of small RNAs that contribute to the translational inhibition and recruitment of stress granules (SGs). To date, there is still limited and controversial experimental evidence relating to a hypothetical role of ANG in the epidermis, the outermost layer of human skin, which is continually exposed to external stressors. The present study collects compelling evidence that endogenous ANG is able to modify its subcellular localization on HaCaT cells, depending on different cellular stresses. Furthermore, the use of recombinant ANG allowed to determine as this special enzyme is effectively able to counter at various levels the alterations of cellular homeostasis in HaCaT cells, actually opening a new vision on the possible functions that this special enzyme can support also in the stress response of human skin.

This study aimed to examine the effects of weightlessness and microgravity, induced by parabolic flight, on specific biomarkers associated with angiogenesis, lipid homeostasis, and cardiovascular diseases, including angiogenin (ANG), angiopoietin-1 (ANGPT-1), angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL4), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and platelet-derived growth factor subunit AA (PDGF-AA). 14 healthy volunteers (mean age: 28.9 years; 6 females) participated in short-term sessions of weightlessness and microgravity using parabolic flights.

Diagnosing and prognosing immune-mediated airway diseases, like hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) and sarcoidosis, is complicated due to their overlapping symptoms and the lack of definitive biomarkers. Hence, we wanted to compare bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytokine and chemokine profiles from 92 patients with different immune-mediated and inflammatory airway diseases, namely, HP, sarcoidosis, non-allergic asthma, amiodarone lung, and EGPA. We also compared pulmonary function parameters, BAL's cellularity, and lymphocyte immunophenotypes.

Marathon running exerts physical stress and may lead to transient immune dysregulation, increasing susceptibility to airway inflammation and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). This study investigated systemic levels of antimicrobial peptides in athletes and their association with EIB. Serum concentrations of angiogenin, human beta-defensin 2 (hBD-2), major basic protein (MBP), S100A8, and S100A8/A9 were measured in 34 marathoners and 36 half-marathoners at baseline, immediately after a race, and seven days postrace using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and compared with 30 sedentary controls.

The induced "recombinogenic situation" in hematopoietic stem cells and the activation of the cell's reparative systems create the basis for recombination events between fragments of extracellular double-stranded DNA delivered into the cell and chromosomal DNA or other forms of the reparative-recombination process. In mouse and rat model organisms as well as in human bone marrow cells, changes in the amount of telomeric DNA in hematopoietic stem cells were assessed as an indicator of repair and recombination events that have occurred. In all experiments performed, recombinant human angiogenin was used as a comparison factor.

A comparative study was conducted to investigate the effects of recombinant human angiogenin and the conditioned media of human somatic cells (bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells, EA.Hy926 endothelial cells, and human skin fibroblasts) on burn wound healing and the levels of IL-1β, TNFα, IL-10, VEGF, and NO in blood serum and skin samples from CD-1 mice. The study found that angiogenin, similar to the conditioned media of human somatic cells, accelerated wound healing in burns.
