Article Abstract

Standard proxies for reconstructing surface mass balance (SMB) in Antarctic ice cores are often inaccurate or coarsely resolved when applied to more complicated environments away from dome summits. Here, we propose an alternative SMB proxy based on photolytic fractionation of nitrogen isotopes in nitrate observed at 114 sites throughout East Antarctica. Applying this proxy approach to nitrate in a shallow core drilled at a moderate SMB site (Aurora Basin North), we reconstruct 700 years of SMB changes that agree well with changes estimated from ice core density and upstream surface topography. For the under-sampled transition zones between dome summits and the coast, we show that this proxy can provide past and present SMB values that reflect the immediate local environment and are derived independently from existing techniques.

The degradation of colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), a widely used antibiotic, is a significant environmental concern due to its persistence in aquatic systems. The zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticle fabricated melamine-formaldehyde polymer (MFP)-based nanocomposite (ZnS-MFP) was prepared via a hydrothermal polymerization method, followed by surface modification through a simple precipitation route. The degradation of TCH through photocatalysis adheres to pseudo-first-order kinetics with a significantly faster rate under natural sunlight than under artificial bulb light.

Poly(γ-stearyl-l-glutamate) (PSLG) is a semiflexible synthetic polypeptide that forms both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) phases. We previously showed that spherical nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with another semiflexible helical polymer, poly(hexyl isocyanate), form lyotropic nematic rather than cubic LC phases. In this work, PSLG ligands for functionalizing 4 nm ZrO NPs were prepared via N-carboxyanhydride ring-opening polymerization.

Integrating surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) into a single probe is a natural step forward for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy (PES), as SEF enables enhanced fluorescent imaging for fast screening of targets, while SERS allows ultrasensitive trace molecular characterization with specificity. However, many challenges remain, e.g.

Introduction: Manganese-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) play a critical role in converting soluble Mn(II) to insoluble Mn(III/IV) oxides, which have been widely applied for environmental remediation, particularly in heavy metal pollution control. Therefore, the discovery of novel MOB strains is of great significance for advancing pollution mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Methods: In this study, a manganese-oxidizing bacterial strain was isolated from Mn-contaminated soil near an electroplating factory using selective LB medium supplemented with 10 mmol/L manganese chloride (MnCl), and the Leucoberbelin Blue (LBB) assay was employed to screen and identify strains with strong Mn(II)-oxidation ability.

Adipic acid is an essential platform molecule for polymer production and is industrially manufactured by thermochemical oxidation of the cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol mixture (KA oil). Alternatively, electrifying provides a green and sustainable route to synthesizing adipic acid, but has been restricted by the low catalytic efficiency. Herein, we report that a nickel hydroxide electrocatalyst functionalized with 4,4'-bipyridine (Bipy-Ni(OH)) delivers a 3-fold greater productivity compared with that of pristine Ni(OH), achieving an excellent yield (90%) towards efficient adipic acid electrosynthesis.
