Evidence suggesting common mechanisms underlie contralateral and ipsilateral negative BOLD responses in the human visual cortex.

Article Abstract

The task-evoked positive BOLD response (PBR) to a unilateral visual hemi-field stimulation is often accompanied by robust and sustained contralateral as well as ipsilateral negative BOLD responses (NBRs) in the visual cortex. The signal characteristics and the neural and/or vascular mechanisms that underlie these two types of NBRs are not completely understood. In this paper, we investigated the properties of these two types of NBRs. We first demonstrated the linearity of both NBRs with respect to stimulus duration. Next, we showed that the hemodynamic response functions (HRFs) of the two NBRs were similar to each other, but significantly different from that of the PBR. Moreover, the subject-wise expressions of the two NBRs were tightly coupled to the degree that the correlation between the two NBRs was significantly higher than the correlation between each NBR and the PBR. However, the activation patterns of the two NBRs did not show a high level of interhemispheric spatial similarity, and the functional connectivity between them was not different than the interhemispheric functional connectivity between the NBRs and PBR. Finally, while attention did modulate both NBRs, the attention-related changes in their HRFs were similar. Our findings suggest that the two NBRs might be generated through common neural and/or vascular mechanisms involving distal/deep brain regions that project to the two hemispheres.

Negative BOLD fMRI responses (NBR) occur commonly in sensory cortex and default mode network regions but remain poorly utilized as a marker of brain function due to an incomplete understanding. To better understand how NBR manifest across the brain, compare between different sensory stimuli and how they are modulated by changes in task demand, we recorded fMRI during trials of visual, auditory, or somatosensory stimulation, delivered either alone or in concurrent pairs. Twenty young-adult participants were cued to attend to a single modality and detect targets in each trial.

Background: Non-Alzheimer's disease dementias, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can be difficult to characterize due to the predominance of distinct behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Widely used measurement tools lack structure and objectivity.

Policy space response oracles (PSRO) is a promising tool to find an approximate Nash equilibrium (NE) in a two-player zero-sum game. It solves the equilibrium by iteratively expanding a small-scale meta-game formed by a restricted strategy population consisting of historical approximate best responses of the meta-games. However, since these best responses have a strong correlation with each other, existing PSRO and its variants often have the slow diversity growth of the strategy population, and thus suffer from poor exploration efficiency and slow convergence rate.

Background: In Taiwan's public health system, community-based pharmacists are key first-line health care providers due to their high accessibility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the pharmacists played a central role in the distribution of these supplies through the Name-Based Rationing System (NBRS), during an acute shortage of masks and testing kits, that helped reduce the spread of the disease. The NBRS, an innovative government-guided strategy developed after the COVID-19 outbreak, provided equitable and convenient access to masks and COVID-19 test kits.
