Locoism refers to a neurological disorder in livestock caused by chronic ingestion of locoweeds, which contain toxic alkaloid swainsonine produced by the fungus . Therefore, reducing swainsonine levels not only prevents locoism but may also transform these toxic plants into animal feed. In this study, we identified a pivotal role for the gene in swainsonine biosynthesis.

The mycotoxin, aflatoxin B (AFB), is a potent mutagen that contaminates agricultural food supplies. After ingestion, AFB is oxidized into a reactive electrophile that alkylates DNA, forming bulky lesions such as the genotoxic formamidopyrimidine lesion, AFB-Fapy dG. This lesion is mainly repaired by nucleotide excision repair (NER) in bacteria; however, in humans the picture is less clear.

Loperamide is a medication commonly used to treat acute and chronic diarrhea and is generally considered safe because it poorly crosses the blood-brain barrier at therapeutic doses. However, in recent years, with the abuse and overdose of loperamide, its potential cardiotoxicity and central nervous system depression have increasingly raised concerns. This article reports a case of a 15-year-old male patient who died from poisoning after a single ingestion of 60 mg of loperamide.
