Article Abstract

CT-based body composition measures are well established in research settings as prognostic markers in oncologic patients. Numerous retrospective studies have shown the role of objective measurements extracted from abdominal CT images of skeletal muscle, abdominal fat, and bone mineral density in providing more accurate assessments of frailty and cancer cachexia in comparison with traditional clinical methods. Quantitative CT-based measurements of liver fat and aortic atherosclerotic calcification have received relatively less attention in cancer care but also provide prognostic information. Patients with cancer routinely undergo serial CT examinations for staging, treatment response, and surveillance, providing the opportunity for quantitative body composition assessment to be performed as part of routine clinical care. The emergence of fully automated artificial intelligence-based segmentation and quantification tools to replace earlier time-consuming manual and semiautomated methods for body composition analysis will allow these opportunistic measures to transition from the research realm to clinical practice. With continued investigation, the measurements may ultimately be applied to achieve more precise risk stratification as a component of personalized oncologic care.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of add-on metformin treatment in persons with active epilepsy (a-PWE). This is a single-centric, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial randomised a-PWE (1:1) to receive either metformin (extended-release 500 mg) or matching placebo for 6 months along with background antiseizure medications. Primary outcome was percentage change in seizure frequency/month, and secondary outcomes were 50% responder rate, serum mTOR expression, and serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), body composition analysis, quality of life (QOL), and safety assessment.

Recent Findings: Obesity is now recognized as a chronic disease and a central contributor to residual cardiovascular risk through mechanisms including systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and endothelial dysfunction. Background: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of daily consumption of white potatoes compared with white rice on cardiometabolic health in individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective: To determine the effects of white potato consumption compared to white rice (a commonly consumed refined grain) on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in individuals with overweight or obesity and T2D.

Methods: In this randomized crossover study, comparative control trial, 24 adults with T2D [45-80 y, body mass index (kg/m) 25-40] consumed baked white potatoes (100 g) or calorie-matched white rice (75 g) daily for 12 wk, separated by a 2-wk washout, with assessments of glycemic control, lipids, inflammation, blood pressure, endothelial function, and body composition at baseline (only 1 baseline visit included as a covariate in statistical analyses), 6 wk, and 12 wk.
