Article Abstract

Electrostatic precipitators are devices that remove charged particles from an air stream. We present the design and characterization of an electrostatic precipitator that is intended to be incorporated into aerosol sampling equipment. Hardware and software components of the design are open, all components can be directly purchased from vendors, and the device can be assembled with standard tools. Generic components are used to allow the repurposing of parts for other uses. The computer-controlled high-voltage power supply box associated with the project can be used for other common high-voltage applications in Aerosol Science and Technology, such as data acquisition and control systems for scanning mobility particle sizers. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to quantify the 3D flow field. The transfer function associated with the partial transmission is characterized through modeling and experiments. The observed transfer function is unique but deviates from the ideal transfer function due to the distortion of the flow near the inlet and the outlet of the device. Singly charged particles up to 624 nm and 253 nm can be completely removed for 0.5 L min and 1 L min, respectively. We anticipate that our device will increase the accessibility of the technique to a broader audience.

Development of the SCI-BodyMap-Measuring Mental Body Representations in Adults With Spinal Cord Injury: Protocol for Item Generation, Reliability, and Validity Testing.

Background: Approximately 69% of Americans with spinal cord injury (SCI) have neuropathic pain. Research suggests that impairments in mental body representations (MBRs; ie, representations of the body in the brain) likely contribute to neuropathic pain. Clinical trials in adults with SCI, focused on restoring MBR, led to improvements in sensation and movement as well as neuropathic pain relief.

Microscale symbioses can be critical to ecosystem functions, but the mechanisms of these interactions in nature are often cryptic. Here, we use a combination of stable isotope imaging and tracing to reveal carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) exchanges among three symbiotic primary producers that fuel a salmon-bearing river food web. Bulk isotope analysis, nanoSIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry) isotope imaging, and density centrifugation for quantitative stable isotope probing enabled quantification of organism-specific C- and N-fixation rates from the subcellular scale to the ecosystem.

The development of high-performance, cost-effective non-noble metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to advancing sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Herein, we report a facile and mild strategy for synthesizing amorphous bimetallic organic framework materials (NiFe-MOFs) using pyridine-modified threonine (l-PyThr) as an organic ligand. The optimized NiFe-PyThr-4:1 catalyst exhibits remarkable OER activity, requiring low overpotentials of only 162 and 222 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm, respectively, along with a small Tafel slope of 34.

Zygotes are used to create genetically modified animals by electroporation using the CRISPR-Cas9 system. Such zygotes in rats are obtained from superovulated female rats after mating. Recently, we reported that in vivo-fertilized zygotes had higher cryotolerance and developmental ability than in vitro-fertilized zygotes in Sprague Dawley (SD) and Fischer 344 rats.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are distinguished by their structural diversity, tunable electronic properties, and exceptional performance in various applications. Notably, the electron-donating ability of ligands significantly enhances the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) processes within these frameworks, thereby promoting efficient charge migration. Herein, we developed two electron-rich macrocyclic ligands derived from phenothiazine- and phenoxazine-functionalized calix[3]arenes, alongside their corresponding cobalt-coordinated MOFs.
