The role of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on S production was assessed through metagenomics analyses. Considering comprehensive performance for the tested HRTs (0.25-13.33 h), the optimal HRT was 1 h, while respective sulfide and nitrite loading rate could reach 6.84 kg S/(m·d) and 1.95 kg N/(m·d), and total S yield was 0.36 kg S/(kg (VSS)·d). Bacterial community richness decreased along the shortening of HRT. Microbacterium, Sulfurimonas, Sulfurovum, Paracoccus and Thauera were highly abundant bacteria. During sulfur metabolism, high expression of sqr gene was the main reason of maintaining high desulfurization load, while lacking soxB caused the continuous increase of S. Regarding nitrogen metabolism, the rapid decrease of nitrite transporter prevented nitrite to enter in cells, which caused a rapid decrease of nitrite removal under extreme HRT. Adjusting HRT is an effective way to enhance S production for the application of the simultaneous sulfide and nitrite removal process.

We recently demonstrated a rapid reaction between labile ferric heme and nitric oxide (NO) in the presence of reduced glutathione (GSH) or other small thiols in a process called thiol-catalyzed reductive nitrosylation, yielding a novel signaling molecule, labile nitrosyl ferrous heme (NO-ferroheme), which we and others have shown can regulate vasodilation and platelet homeostasis. Red blood cells (RBCs) contain high concentrations of GSH, and NO can be generated in the RBC via nitrite reduction and/or RBC endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) so that NO-ferroheme could, in principle, be formed in the RBC. NO-ferroheme may also form in other cells and compartments, including in plasma, where another small and reactive thiol species, hydrogen sulfide (HS/HS), is also present and may catalyze NO-ferroheme formation akin to GSH.

With the increasing emphasis on environmental safety, food inspection, and plant physiological functions, the development of high-performance fluorescent probes capable of highly sensitive, specific, rapid, and visual detection of target analytes has become a focal point in current research. Hemicyanine groups are widely utilized in the design of organic small-molecule fluorophores due to their low cost, structural stability, and ease of chemical modification. Through simple structural adjustments, the photoluminescent properties of hemicyanine-based fluorophores can be significantly enhanced, enabling strong signal output and maintaining stable fluorescence intensity across various solvents and pH conditions-features that make them particularly suitable for complex biological and chemical environments.

This study assessed groundwater quality in the Rio das Velhas Basin (Minas Gerais, Brazil)-a mining‑influenced watershed under strong anthropogenic pressure-using data from 35 observation wells monitored between 2004 and 2023. A total of 26 parameters were evaluated, including metal(oid)s (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chloride, fluoride, nitrite, nitrate, sulfur, cadmium, lead, copper, chromium, iron, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, sodium, zinc) and microbiological indicators (thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli). Water quality was assessed through the groundwater quality index (GWQI), carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk analyses, and irrigation-related risks (sodium adsorption ratio, SAR; residual sodium carbonate, RSC).

The understanding of microbial diversity and their metabolic activities inside the oil reservoir is not well understood. The microbial community of the oil reservoir plays diversified roles from souring to microbial enhanced oil recovery. Therefore, studying community dynamics, phylogenetic diversity and ecological roles of the community inside the reservoir is crucial.

Anoxic biodesulphurisation using a biogenic nitrified source as an electron acceptor is a potential alternative to aerobic HS biotreatment. This work reports the successful combination of nitrified centrate obtained from innovative constructed wetlands (CWs) with anoxic suspended biomass bioreactors (SBBs) treating real biogas. The quality of the liquid medium on the biodesulphurisation process was evaluated.
