Memories of the past are critically important as we age. For older adults receiving formal care in a range of settings, reminiscing with care staff may provide frequent opportunities for recalling autobiographical memories with a supportive conversational partner. Importantly, prior research suggests that some reminiscing conversations are more supportive than others. In the developmental literature, a long tradition of sociocultural memory research has shown how children's autobiographical memory is scaffolded and supported by parents during reminiscing, when parents use a particular kind of conversational technique, known as "elaborative reminiscing". In the current project, we aimed to examine whether we could enhance conversations between staff and older people receiving aged care by teaching care staff about these beneficial conversational techniques and supporting them to reminisce more often with residents/clients. We also aimed to determine whether staff members' use of elaborative reminiscing techniques was associated with autobiographical memory details recalled by residents/clients during routine conversations. We conducted a workshop with 16 staff within a residential aged care and community care setting. We followed this with a 4-week training-and-feedback period during which staff recorded their conversations with residents and clients. Staff feedback indicated successful use of the scaffolding techniques overall, and benefits as well as barriers to their use in day-to-day practice. Analysis of the conversations demonstrated that the use of particular elaborative reminiscing techniques by staff was associated with increased recall of episodic and semantic autobiographical memory details by residents/clients. Overall, findings suggest that the principles of elaborative reminiscing may apply across the lifespan, and that the benefits of elaborative reminiscing for autobiographical memory may be particularly important in times of cognitive need. Practically, training aged care staff in specific and practical conversational tools can facilitate reminiscing for people receiving aged care.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of elaborative reminiscing on children's mental health during the pandemic. In 2020, 43 Estonian and German highly educated middle-class parents were asked to audio record reminiscing conversations with their children and to report their own and their children's mental health using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, respectively. The participating children (57% girls) were, on average, 49 months old.

Cross-linguistic differences in narrative patterns were examined in bilingual mother-preschooler dyads. Twenty-six Thai-English bilingual mothers and their four-year-old children completed a reminiscing task where they jointly recalled autobiographical memories in response to word prompts. Bilingual mothers and children exhibited different reminiscing styles in each of their languages.

Families have been subject to enormous transformations with the emergence of artificial reproductive technology and the appearance of donor-conceived children. These new families are challenged to disclose origins with their children and parents feel concern that conception stories might have an emotional impact on their children. Fertility counsellors still feel ill-equipped on what to recommend to parents because developmental psychology has not designed systematic evidence-based guidelines to address a three-dimensional matter: 'what', 'when', and 'how' to discuss conception stories.

This longitudinal study aimed to examine the long-term effects of Reminiscing and Emotion Training (RET), child maltreatment, and the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal elaboration and sensitive guidance during reminiscing. RET was developed to improve maternal elaborative and emotionally sensitive reminiscing among maltreating mothers of preschool-aged children. Of the original 248 mothers and their preschool-aged children who participated in the trial of RET, which included 165 families with maltreatment who were randomized to receive RET ( = 83) or a case management community standard condition (CS, = 82), and a group of demographically similar families with no history of child maltreatment, nonmaltreatment comparison (NC, = 83), 166 families participated in an assessment 5 years postintervention (Time 5; T5) at which children were aged 8-12 years.

Objective: The Reminiscing and Emotion Training (RET) intervention targets and improves maltreating mothers' elaboration and sensitivity in reminiscing (conversations about past emotional events), as well as children's emotion knowledge. However, in previous studies of RET, improvements in mothers' elaborative and sensitive reminiscing did not explain improvements in children's emotion knowledge. Thus, we evaluated whether RET is associated with improved maternal autonomy support during reminiscing and whether improved autonomy support is associated with enhanced child emotion knowledge after RET.
