Article Abstract

Controlling foamability plays the central role in preparing PLA foams with high performances. To achieve this, chain extension was often used to improve the rheological property of PLA resins; however, despite the availability of this approach, it often deteriorates the biodegradability of PLA and greatly increases the processing cost and complexity. Hence, we reported a special crystallization induction method to design PLA foams with a tunable cellular structure and a high expansion ratio. A novel crystallization-promoting agent combination (D-sorbitol, CO, and phenylphosphonic acid zinc salt) was used to induce PLA to enhance the chain interaction force and chain mobility and to provide crystallization templets. A series of PLAs with tunable stereocomplex (Sc)/α crystallinity and rapid non-isothermal crystallization ability were obtained. The effect of various crystallization properties on the foaming behavior of PLA was studied. The results demonstrated that proper crystallization conditions (a small spherulite size, a crystallinity of 6%, and rapid crystallization ability) could virtually contribute to the optimized cellular structure with the highest cell density of 4.36 × 10 cell/cm. When the Sc crystallinity was above 10%, PLA had a superior foamability, which thereby resulted in a high foaming expansion ratio of 16.2. A variety of cellular morphologies of PLA foams could be obtained by changing the foaming temperature and the crystallization property. The proposed crystallization-induced approach provided a useful method for controlling the cellular structure and the performances of the PLA foams.

Although polylactic acid (PLA) stereocomplex (SC) crystallites have superior mechanical strength and heat resistance compared to homocrystallites (HC), the preparation of PLA foams with a high content of SC crystallites and a fine cell structure remains challenging. Herein, d-Mannitol (DM) with plentiful hydroxyl groups was utilized as an efficient bio-based nucleating agent for the SC crystallization of PLLA/PDLA blends. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of DM significantly promoted SC crystallization under both non-isothermal and isothermal conditions.

In this study, the processing-microstructure-properties interrelationships of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foams filled with different nanosilica types and particle sizes through a reactive extrusion process were investigated in depth. The simultaneous melt-compounding and foaming extrusion processes of PLA/nanosilica systems, in the presence of a chain extender (CE) and chemical foaming agents, exhibit great complexity. The findings showed that the studied variables, including nanosilica type, nanofiller loading, and CE content, had strong interactions and affected the phenomena involved in the extrusion process.

Polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) is attractive as a biodegradable polymer foam owing to its light weight, resilience, high flexibility and low price. However, modifying PBAT foam to improve its strength and reduce its shrinkage while maintaining its resilience has been a challenge. In this study, we used in situ fibrillation to incorporate a dual nanofiber network of rigid polylactic acid (PLA) and soft polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in a branched PBAT (CEPBAT) foam.

This study explored the innovative foaming behavior of a novel biodegradable polymer blend consisting of polylactic acid/poly(butylene succinate)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBS/PBAT) enhanced with nanohydroxyapatite (nHA), using supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO) as an environmentally friendly physical foaming agent. The aim was to investigate the effects of various foaming strategies on the resulting cell structure, aiming for potential applications in tissue engineering. Eight foaming strategies were examined, starting with a basic saturation process at high temperature and pressure, followed by rapid decompression to ambient conditions, referred to as the (1T-1P) strategy.

Halloysite nanoclay (HNC) and as-polymerized polytetrafluoroethylene powder (PTFE) were introduced into biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) via a melt mixing technique to enhance its mechanical, rheological properties and foaming ability. The synergetic effects of these fillers on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, and foaming properties of PLA were investigated. Results indicated that the tensile properties were improved in comparison to neat PLA.
