Article Abstract

Although diaryl tellurides are parent organotellurium compounds, their synthesis methods, especially for unsymmetrical ones, are limited. This may be due to the instability of diaryl tellurides and their synthesis intermediates under reaction conditions. Radical reactions are known to exhibit excellent functional group selectivity; therefore, we focused on a bimolecular homolytic substitution (S2) reaction between the aryl radical and diaryl ditelluride. Aryl radicals are generated from arylhydrazines in air and captured by diaryl ditellurides, resulting in a selective formation of unsymmetrical diaryl tellurides with high yields. The electronic effects of the substituents on both arylhydrazines and diaryl ditellurides on the S2 reaction of tellurium are also discussed in detail.

A highly efficient new protocol has been developed for the formation of C-Te bonds, leading to both symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl tellurides. This protocol utilizes sodium aryltellurites (4), which can be easily prepared from low-cost aryltelluride trichlorides and NaOH. The synthesis involves the use of 4 and arylazo sulfones as starting materials in the presence of (MeO)P(O)H.

A new series of unsymmetrical phenyl tellurides derived from 2-N-(quinolin-8-yl) benzamide ligand has been synthesized in a practical manner by the copper-catalyzed method by using diaryl ditelluride and Mg as a reductant at room temperature. In order to augment the Lewis acidity of these newly formed unsymmetrical monotellurides, these have been transformed into corresponding unsymmetrical 2-N-(quinolin-8-yl)benzamide tellurium cations. Subsequently, these Lewis acidic tellurium cations were used as chalcogen bonding catalysts, enabling the synthesis of various substituted 1,2-dihydroquinolines by activating ketones with anilines under mild conditions.

In this study, the reactivity of organochalcogen compounds toward a representative alkyl-lead bond compound under light was investigated in detail. Under light irradiation, the Cy-Pb bond of CyPb (Cy = cyclohexyl) undergoes homolytic cleavage to generate a cyclohexyl radical (Cy•). This radical can be successfully captured by diphenyl diselenide, which exhibits excellent carbon-radical-capturing ability.

A synthetic method has been developed for the synthesis of unsymmetrical ferrocene aryl chalcogenides by C-H activation of ferroceneamide using 8-aminoquinoline as a directing group, aryl dichalcogenides, and copper(II) catalyst in the presence of silver acetate oxidant at 80 °C in DMSO. The developed methodology is quite general and mild to access three unsymmetrical diaryl chalcogenides (sulfide, selenide, and telluride) and also amenable to aryl dichalcogenides with sensitive bromo, chloro, and nitro functionalities. Further, ferrocene aryl tellurides have been obtained in moderate yields for the first time by the developed C-H activation approach.
