Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have gained prominence for their efficacy in treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. Recent evidence suggests that their pleiotropic effects-beyond glycemic control and weight loss-include anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidative effects, which may beneficially support various dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, acanthosis nigricans, and Hailey-Hailey disease. However, GLP-1 RAs are also associated with emerging cutaneous adverse drug reactions, including bullous, exanthematous and vasculitic manifestations, and other rare side effects.

Background The prognostic value of baseline visual emphysema scoring at low-dose CT (LDCT) in lung cancer screening cohorts is unknown. Purpose To determine whether a single visual emphysema score at LDCT is predictive of 25-year mortality from all causes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Materials and Methods In this prospective cohort study, asymptomatic adults aged 40-85 years with a history of smoking underwent baseline LDCT screening for lung cancer between June 2000 and December 2008.

Minimally Invasive vs Open Surgery for Thoracolumbar Fractures in Patients With Ankylosing Spinal Diseases: A Meta-Analysis.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

August 2025

From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery (Daher, Aoun, Sebaaly), Hotel Dieu de France Hospital, Beirut, LEBANON, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery (Daher, Diebo, Daniels), Brown University, Providence, RI, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery (Daher, Cottrill, Passias), Duke University, Durham,

Background: Surgical management of thoracolumbar fractures in patients with ankylosing spinal disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis remains debated. Although several studies have compared minimally invasive surgery to open fixation of thoracolumbar fractures in this patient population, a meta-analysis compiling the literature on this topic is lacking.

Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar (pages 1 to 20) were accessed and explored until October 2024.

Critical roles of rare species in the anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacterial community in coastal sediments.

Mar Life Sci Technol

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science and College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361005 China.

Unlabelled: Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) plays a critical role in nitrogen loss in estuarine and marine environments. However, the mechanisms underlying the formation and maintenance of the anammox bacterial community remain unclear. This study analyzed the anammox bacterial diversity, community structure, and interspecific relationships in three estuaries along the Chinese coastline -the Changjiang Estuary (CJE), the Oujiang Estuary (OJE), and the Jiulong River Estuary (JLE) - as well as the South China Sea (SCS) to elucidate their community assembly mechanisms.

Introduction: The emergence of highly virulent strains of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus has driven the need for new vaccines. This study evaluates the efficacy of an intranasal (IN) vaccine composed of a naturally attenuated PRRSV-2 isolate, compared to a commercially available intramuscularly administered (IM) PRRSV-1 vaccine, against a heterologous challenge with a highly virulent PRRSV-1 strain (R1).

Methods: Sixty-eight PRRSV-naïve pigs were divided into four groups: two non-vaccinated controls (NV/NCh, NV/Ch), one IM-vaccinated with a PRRSV-1 MLV (Por), and one intranasally (IN)-vaccinated with the PRRSV-2 vaccine (IL).
